Default Changing over an Air Conditioner

I got an Air conditioner sitting in my old '94 Civic EX, and it's just begging me to take it out and put it into the new '92 Civic Hatch (which lacks an AC system all togethar) that I bought. Trouble is, I'm afraid I'll get myself into something that's going to take me six weeks to get out of. Assuming I can get out of it at all.

Any thoughts, anyone here ever done such a thing? Got any good recources, tips, warnings, so on and so on?

sounds like an easy swap considering the engine bays are exactly the same the lines from the firewall should follow the same form and can easily be transfered..the hatch should have the condenser support and brackets should not be a problem....i think the only thing would be the compressor mounting on the bracket on your hatch....which model do you have im not to sure..if someone can clarify this for me...if your car has an existing connector for the compressor.....its an easy swap...if not....wires wires wires

Well, it's a '92 Civic Hatchback DX (bad move, I've had to put everything in myself, power locks, windows, mirrors *sigh*).

I havent the faintest clue about the connector for the compressor, but bear in mind that I don't have a way to completely lift the car off the ground 6 feet, and I don't have the means to remove the engine. So with that in mind, you think (besides the possability for wiring issues) the swap should be somewhat simple. You think I'll need to remove the engine.?

you dont need to lift the car off the ground to remove or installl the A/C unit.....the swap is simple ......the only thing you will remove is the battery.......there are a/c lines that come out of the firewall..they come across to the radiator and go under to the other side....connect to condenser and compressor ....simple as that....no need to remove engine....only 2 posts....WELCOME TO HT

I removed my A/C in about 3 hours and that includes all the under dash pieces.

But that was dumb, because now the wife is pregnant and I need all of it back in

Well make sure when you put the system back you verify what your going to fill the system up with..

If the system was an R12 you might as well convert it to R134A.. it will be more cost effective since the refrigerant is cheaper. When you do that clean out all the hoses and Oil's in the system. Then replace the O-rings with some compatiable rings.(yes R12 and R134A O-Rings are different). Change the Accumulator with a 134A style.

THen take it to someone who can vaccum test the system then fill it up.. Please dont use those Over the counter refills.. You will Notice the difference.

Also before you start make sure you have the parts required.. you can look at your exsisting car to see what is missing from yours.. You Might need to install and remove the evaporator.. you can verify this by looking at your battery look to the right of it and see if there is 2 silver hoses with caps on them comming out of the firewall .. if you dont see this then you will have to remove the box behind the glovebox from both your cars and swap them. Very hard and time consuming if you dont know what your doing.

Remove and replace the following

Ac Lines High side and Low side
Condensor ( looks like a radiator )
Compresor and Mount
Accumulator (tank look like thing)
and worst case.. Evaporator (air box behind the glovebox)

Now when you remove the lines make sure you use Tubing Wrenches from rounding out the aluminum hoses.

So everything should bolt right up?

I'm going from a stock EX motor to a stock Hatch DX motor.

Yes it will bolt up ..

Most of the '92 to '95' are the same.. BUT watch out.. I bought my Hatch with a converted R134A system swap out of it but my friends R12 system was different. esp the wiring behind the glovebox for the Temp sensor.

your cx didn't come with a/c at all? even if so you should have no big problems swapping over the a/c system. you may run in to some line routing because '92 car had r-12 and by'94 all cars were R-134a. the lines are different between the two systems. but then it is a honda and they keep things fairly universal so......

i do recommend having a professional pull a vacuum on the system and filling it, you could do damage to the system without the proper tools.
