Default Changing Alternator in 1998 CIVIC EX

Looking at the vehicle prior to removing the alternator, what is the easiest way to get it out and get a new one in? Is it possible to remove it from the top? It looks like it might be possible but would be really a tight fit, or would I have to drop the axel and remove the alternator from the bottem like you would in a 1993 INtegra?

Any help would be appreciated.

When mine went bad I was able to remove it without taking out the axle. I just loosend it and wiggled it out. It came out of the top, and I didnt even have to remove the intake manifold.

i would think you should be able to get it out thru the bottom without having to take the axle out.

ya, it didnt actually tell you how to get it out the top. i know that if i drop the axle it will come out, but thats alot of work just to replace the alternator. did you get yours out of the top?

read Luserkid's answer, third post down. He says he got it out the bottom, but didn't need to pull the axle. I think w/ ex models (d16y8 motors) the intake manifold gets in the way and short of taking out your brake booster, it's impossible from the top. Peoplel with the d16y7 seem to have just enough room to get it ot the top due to the different intake design on this engine.

I would follow Luserkid's advise and try removing it from the bottom per his instructions.

good luck... let us know how it turns out.

I had to remove the alternator once on my y5. It will come out the bottom but it only comes out and goes in one way and it is possible without removing the axle.

really it's not, read the post kkim posted and go to the 3rd post down. You have to remove the bracked then you can get the alternator out. I did the same thing and I put some power pulleys on, although it has been awhile but it was a pain with the axle in but you can do it.
