Change over OEM ignition key cylinder to junkyard ignition
Someone broke into my car and tried to steal it. They broke the ignition off of the steering column so I had to get another column from the junkyard. What im wondering is how I change over the key cylinder from my old ignition to the new one so I can use the same key? Thanks all.

You want to use your old key on the "new" ignition right? If so, you have to take the ignition in to a locksmith and have it re-keyed, do it before you install it, its cheaper that way.

I've only messed with a 6th gen, but I imagine they are the same. You'll find a tamper proof torx screw on it that will have to come out. You'll need the other key to turn it and extract the "guts" of the cylinder. Do the same with your old column and swap the internals.

You can take the "new" ignition to a locksmith or you can shave a Honda key and try to make it work in the "new" lock and tumbler to remove it from the housing. As for your old ignition, put the key in and turn it to the on position and theres a little button looking thing on the side ofthe housing, push that and wiggle the good lovk and tumbler. They are a little tricky to get back in but with some patience you'll get it. I did this in my brothers Type R when people tried to steal it, my key from my EJ8 is worn enough that it worked in the junk yard ignition.

Re: Change over OEM ignition key cylinder to junkyard ignition
So basically I cant get the junkyard key cylinder out without the key for it? Man, I was hoping I could just pop them out and swap them. So to take out my old key cylinder, I turn the key to the on position and then push in the button and it shoudl pop out. It looks to me like there is a torx screw on the side of it. Do I need to remove this?

As they have stated before, just get it re-keyed. This is mainly the reason why I sell the ignition with the door and hatch lock off my Integra's with the keys. Even if they don't need all the locks they at least have them JIC they decide they only want to use 1 key.

Can a locksmith pull the key cylinder out of the junkyard one and swap mine in? Shouldnt be too expensive I would imagine.

Does your old key fit in the new ignition? When I changed mine I used a key and the help of a "scribe" You will also have to remove the torx bolt on your old ignition and on the one from the junkyard to pull both of them

Re: Change over OEM ignition key cylinder to junkyard ignition
Sorry to revive a 2 year old thread, but Would I be able to swap the key cylinder from a 92 civic onto a 97 civic ignition?
My original ignition won't mount onto the 97 steering column I'm trying to install and i don't want to have to use 2 different keys to start/open my car.
