are CF hoods street legal?
Reason I ask this is because VIS's web site has this disclaimers saying "for off road use only" kinda concerned cause I am getting a new hood cause of an accident, but it has to pass inspection with a insurance adjuster before they will keep me insured if i fix it myself.
anyone knowledgeable about this?
thanks!

In order to avoid legal issues, most aftermarket companys will have a "not legal for use on a public highway" type disclaimers on their products. You usually want to check your local laws, to determine if something is illegal or not. Though I've never heard of anyone getting a ticket for a CF hood, even in my strict area.

i had an accident and replaced my hood with a carbon fiber, passed, they have it is a disclamier to cover their own asses, and if so slapp some hood pins in but have the body shop do it, drilling in to clear coat and c fiber at home, you wont like it.

the reason they probally say that is because alot of the cf hoods arent that durable (atleast the cheaper ones) and if you get into an accident its more likely to break to crap compared to the heavy steel oem one

Actually most CF hoods will fold in half, or flex, then straighten out and break at the hinges. The usually hold their shape pretty well for the most part. The statement is made by the manufacturer, to avoid legal hassles if you get in an accident, or it flies up while driving, etc.

My VIS hood is actually more sturdier than my stock one. I was afraid of my stock one, that thing bounced up and down like all hell, with my CF one, it just sits there. VIS

Exactly. VIS just says that to cover their own asses. If you get in an accident and the hood gets wrecked or whatever, it's your fault for using it on the road. This takes any responsobility away from them.

I heard there illegal. I wouldn't worried about get a ticket tho. IMO I would worried about if you get in an other accident, your insurance company would try to get out of paying. They always trying to pull ****.

you could always get it painted and it would look like a stock hood but with all the weight savings of a c/f hood... and it might look cleaner as well

actualliy, thats what i'm planning on doing.. and I realized that i can get a fiberglass hood with similar characteristics and weight for much cheaper... i may do that, then paint it for sure.

lol you can paint anything... and if you search there are threads on this, my evo style c/f hood weighs in 16 lbs. made by VIS, fiber images is i think 15 lbs but if you get fiberglass they can weigh as little as 8 lb/s just get hood pins lol

yeah you definitely can paint them, but seems like a waste because theyre not THAT light, and most people buy them for aesthetics, so i figured i'd just go with fiberglass.
