Are you sure you're jumping the service connector by the ECU? I don't ever remember my SRS light blinking. Even when I had a jacked up cable reel.
Jump the connector with a paperclip like you mentioned. turn the ignition to the "ON" position. Start counting blinks. Short blink is ONE
long blink is TEN
Example: 3 long blinks and 4 short ones would be 34.
Not sure if you found this thread yet or not

If your SRS light was turning on instead of your check engine lights you have a different problem than your distributor. Check the wires behind the gauge cluster to make sure their not shorting out somewhere. Fix that problem before you start looking at other issues you have.

when reading codes, your CEL should be the only one flashing. and since you have the distributor already, i would just replace it. it would suck to return it and 1000mi later being standed. now you really need to replace it.

srs light shouldn't blink, when it senses an airbag error it will stay on. If it comes on instead of your CEL, and flashes when you jump it, it sounds to me like you have a short behind the gauge cluster. I had a friend that added some gauges to his car and he halfassed it, well two bare cables came in touch with each other, and whenever he turned on his left turn signal it would send current threw the cable which would short with the other and his tach would jump up and down each time electricity was sent thru. Pull your cluster out and check the wiring, make sure nothing is cut or no bare wire is grounding out.
