CEL and Speedo problem
Have a few problems I need help with.
First problem is after I changed the alternator on my d-series, my brake light wont turn off. That is a small problem in between the other probs I'm running into.
I just did a b18 swap on the civic. The first day I ran it, no issues. The next morning as I was going to work, The lower rad hose popped off while I was driving, and The engine started to get hot real quick. I pulled over, reattached to hose(forgot to clamp it down), and coasted over to a gas station for water. I fill her up and drive slow to work. No issues yet. Went out to lunch, no issues. After I leave work, about 9 mins later my CEL light comes on. Car seems to be running fine. I turn off the car, check all my connections and find nothing loose or unplugged. I turn my car back on, no CEL. After another 9mins the CEL comes on.
Also my speedo seems to have a mind of its own. It'll work for the first 15 mins, then not work at all. ABout to take it out to see if it's connected properly.
ANy suggestions would help. Also, can I pull a CEL from the ECU if the light doesn't come on til after 9mins of driving?

Re: CEL and Speedo problem
What year Civic?
Pull the CEL codes. Did coolant/water spray all over the engine? If so, you might have some shorting in some connectors in the engine bay. You may need to dry them off with compressed air.
Check the switch at the top of the brake pedal. It may be broken.

Re: CEL and Speedo problem
Thanks Ron, actually the guy I was hoping to help out.
Can I still pull the CEL if after I turn off the car the CEL doesn't come on until after 9mins of driving? Some coolant did spray, but it's dried off for what I can tell. I'll hit it with a spray when I get to my buddies.
I'll check the switch at the top of the brake pedal too. For a little more info, the brake light thing happened after I changed the alternator on the d-series. I think I might've shorted something out, b/c I forgot to unplug the battery and got sparks from the ratchet hitting the intake mani I believe.
Thanks for all the help.

Re: CEL and Speedo problem
Would do that, but I aired out the sensors with a compressor and no CEL anymore and my speedo works. Thanks Ron for that info. Now I just need to look into that Brake switch and fix the last problem with my civic. Is the brake switch expensive? I notice that when I use the E-Brake, the brake light dims. (Just so no one is confused, the BRAKE light in the cluster). I'll check it out after work.

the speedooo and alternator are on the same fuse. the light in the cluster is turned on by a ground wire attached the actual ebrake handle. its probably frayed somewhere and grounded prematurely

What are you talking about? My cluster not working and the CEL coming on mean dizzy? No I fixed that problem. Can't be talking about the brake light are you?
