CEL and Hole in Exhaust Pipe

CEL and Hole in Exhaust Pipe
First post here so bear with me.
Son has a 2000 Civic with 160K miles on it. Runs good and has a small oil leak on the bottom end somewhere, just haven't been able to find it yet. Also has a loud exhaust leak.
Issue at had, he was on the highway today at about 70 mph and the CEL started blinking. He pulled off the road and it went solid. I got the car home and took for a drive. Anything over 55 mph and it goes into limp mode. Exhaust noise is loud. Jacked it up and found a hole in the pipe after the cat (under front seats). It about 8' long and 2" wide.
Could this be causing the CEL? Car idles and runs fine otherwise. Thanks!

Re: CEL and Hole in Exhaust Pipe
A hole in the exhaust can indeed throw a code but usually only if its pre-catalytic converter. Pick yourself up a cheap OBD2 reader ($10 for one that connects to your phone) and pull the code. Its just goes into a plug right in the passenger foot-well. Then you will know for certain.

Re: CEL and Hole in Exhaust Pipe
So just found out the key is stuck in the ignition SMH.. He forgot to tell me this happened months ago lol. So now I will need to replace that before I can run codes. Anyone else have suggestions? I am going to go ahead and replace the plugs, wires and Dist. while I am at it. Not sure I can fix the exhaust though. Its welded to the muffler on that end. Probably just take it to a shop for that part.
I agree though that since the hole is much past the down O2, probably not the reason for the CEL. Wish that was all it was..

Re: CEL and Hole in Exhaust Pipe
Well I replaced the following today and here are the results.
Replaced ignition cylinder
Replaced Plugs, Wires
Replaced Dizzy Cap, Rotor and Ing Coil
CEL was reset from disconnecting battery.
Drove it to the store so I could rent a scan tool. On the way there everything seemed fine until a long hill. Got to 40 mph and you could tell it needed to down shift for more power. It did and was followed by flashing CEL. Went away after a few seconds but DID NOT STORE A CODE. Light went off completely. On a straight road at 40mph I kicked it down and it was fine with no hesitation or CEI.
Ran the scanner and pulled P1399 Random Misfire.
Headed home and a block from the house it flashed again at 40mph but this time it stored a code.
Checked and double checked everything again but I don’t see anything.
Car idles fine and drives fine. No shaking or rough feeling at all. I haven’t had it above 60 though so who knows.
I forgot to mention that that I did smell something today when the light was flashing. My guess it is dumping fuel into the cat.
Any other suggestions or did I miss something?
Kids car and he drives it to school and work. Maybe puts on 50-60 miles per week.
Thanks for the help in advance.

Re: CEL and Hole in Exhaust Pipe
Is their anything special with regards to installation of the new dizzy? Timing, etc?
I see the ears ears have to pretty much be lined up for it to go into the cam but not sure if anything else needs to be done.
Thabks!

Re: CEL and Hole in Exhaust Pipe
Installed the new Dizzy. Took it for a drive and after about 10 minutes going up a hill the CEL started flashing again. Did not stay lit but could again smell the cat.
Not sure where to go from here.
Also, as I let off the gas, brake and come to a stop, the idle is super low but then evens out after about 15 seconds. Happens every time this way. Any way to adjust this for a diy type of guy?
Thanks!

Re: CEL and Hole in Exhaust Pipe
I also pulled each plug wire while running and all cylinders are getting fire.
Took for another drive and performance over all seems much better. The idle issue also went away, for now.

Re: CEL and Hole in Exhaust Pipe
Upon further test drives, CEL stayed solid and I pulled the following codes.
P0303
P0304
P1399
So now it’s narrowed down to cylinders 3 and 4. For plugs that are only a few days old, those specific ones have a lot of carbon already.
Again the CEL flashes while going up hills. Gets to 40 and has a hard token accelerating with normal pedal pressure. Kicks down fine when I mash it but still.
Many suggestions on what I can test next?
Thanks!
