Start with the lean code (P0171). That's the more important one. Find out why your engine is running lean, you have to do some diagnostic work (best bet is to pick up a FSM for exact procedures), but a good place to start is to look for vacuum leaks and exhaust leaks, and fix whatever you find. If you find any problems there, clear the codes (after you fix them, of course), drive the car normally for a few days and see if the light comes back on. If it comes on again with the same code, it could also be a air/fuel monitoring problem, which means one of a few possible sensors could be bad.

The evaporative emissions (EVAP) system basically keeps fuel fumes from escaping into the atmosphere. That won't affect how the car runs, it's just a federally mandated emissions thing, so worry about this after the lean code is fixed.

With an OBDII scanner.

ok, thanks. you said exhaust leaks could cause the problem. my exhaust has recently made alot of rattling like something is loose, could that be a problem. do you think it could be the fuel injectors. maybe they neeed to be cleaned?

does your exhaust sound like a can of marbles being shaked around? You probably got a leak, it sounds kinda like that.
