Default CD Changer Audio Problem

I have a 98 civic, factory installed 6 CD changer in the trunk. Hoping someone has some ideas on how to debug this

Most of the time the entire left channel will not play or play at a really low volume. The speakers and radio are fine (verified by selecting each speaker individually). Once in awhile the CD plays from all 4 channels. No idea why.

My only guess is that the laser is out of allignment, but I don't want to spend the money to have some pro tell me that.

Thanks.

to clarify - the left channel doesn't play from the CD when the balance selector is in the middle or to the left. When playing the radio, the left channel always plays when the balance is either middle or to the left. would there be a difference in the input from the CD player on the balance?
