Default CCFL climate control lighting

i got an idea recently-what do you guys think of this- i'm planning on using a mini 6" white CCFL mounted behind the panel for the climate control. it would be easy enough to solder up to an existing bulb terminal (runs on 12v) and, judging by the dimensions, would fit perfectly into the white bulb-holder panel. i'm hoping it will give it a cool hyper-white look a lot brighter than the dimmer whitish yellow it came with. CCFLs are about as cheap as the bulbs, around $5/ea. (i would only need one). anybody know anything about the life of the CCFL lights, is it about the same as a neon light?
