catastrophe!
(98 ex coupe, 85,000 miles) so yesterday i pull out of my garage and my engine is making some very lound noise, kind of like marbles thrown into a metal fan. i open up the hood while its idling and it seems to be a belt squeaking, so i decide to try to drop it off at the shop so they can look at it this morning. on the way to the shop, i have trouble getting above 4,000rpms, and as i said, very loud. about five miles from my house, my engine starts smoking and the smell of gas is overwealming. i stall out at a stoplight for 5-10 minutes, finally get it started again, and a few hundred yards later i hear (over the metal/marble gargle) an explosion sound and the car dies. i coast into the next parking lot, tow truck comes and picks the car up. haven't heard from the shop yet, any idea what this could be? i looked under the hood, no visable problem other than some smoke, and the passenger compartment smelled very strong (like gas) i'm fearing my timing belt snapped, causing some internal damage. the weird thing is that my check engine didn't light up, flash, nothing. any ideas?

This is possible, however, if your timing belt snapped, it's more of an instantaneous thing, not something that you would be able to drag out for 5-10 miles. Unless, it slowly was breaking apart, little piece by little piece. Anything's possible though. I would just wait and see what the shop says. Good luck with that.

Sounds like it was a rod bearing and you trying to rev past 4k was the dumbiest thing ever. You should always granny drive your car if you think something is wrong with it so nothing like this could happen.
Did you pop your hood after the explosion, you might have seen a nice big hole in the block.

Why in the world would you rev your car up after hearing funny noises?
Seriously... the problem is not going to work itself out if you rev it up... all you did was make the problem worse, you might have even blown your engine...

Re: (bbarbulo)
Maybe you have a really bad blown headgasket, and or warped head. THe explosion was probably a backfire leaking out somewhere.
Yea, your engine sounds pretty fuxz0red.
Oh I just read it again.. I think what bbarbulo said is more the story.

I'm thinking the same thing. I'm very suprised you don't have a huge hole through the block.
When was the last time you checked the oil? Your motor is barely broken in at that milage...

Re: catastrophe! (Kamin)
Is the car at the shop that changed your oil? If so I would go down there and check you oil ASAP, before they just call you and tell you your ***** is screwed and you have to foot the bill. If the shop messed up in any way then it is there responsibility to fix the damages! Thats why it is key for people to know just a little about what they have. I check my oil all the time, I also change my own oil, taking it to a shop is having some kid doing it for you. Not saying they will always mess up or that I never do, you just have to check over things.
