Carfax doesn't show stolen VINS as stolen
How do I know?
Well, while having my carfax account a few type-r owners gave me their VINS numbers of their cars that were stolen a year ago...
Carfax, came back clean on both of them.
Is there someone in here that has actually seen a "stolen" carfax report?
PS. If the cars are recovered, then carfax does show the theft recovery etc....
But it they never find the car, carfax remains clean.... till they find it...
That's my theory anyway.

I suppose that the owners have to report the car stolen to Car FAX. Car Fax will only list the info submitted to them. I bought an engine from a Car that was totaled and the car fax reported that it has a clean title, but I know that the car was gone.
If the accident wasn't reported then the carfax report will be clean. I would encourage the owners of those stolen R's to report them to Carfax so that the if the parts are sold then buyers can look up the status if Given the VIN

So here's my hypothesis.
Dude A steals USDM motor. Dude A sells it on ebay as legit because carfax is clean. Dude B buys motor and live the rest of their life thinking he got a legit motor.
That;s fucked up!! I mean, what the hell are we supposed to do? Go to the local cop station and ask if the VIN is stolen? We are not private investigators.

Unfortunately yes we do have to investigate. If you put anything on your car that is not stock and don't look into whether your car will be smog legal or within safety standards then you leave yourself open to the possibility of receiving traffic tickets or if your motor turns up stolen then you'll end up without one and answering a lot of questions

i think it's just that some states are more strict about giving the dmv all the little info on cars. i know that in wa they don't report theft recoveries to the dmv until after the final inspection, so if you get a clean title then carfax will never know. another thing is that carfax doesn't report stolen cars as stolen, it reports them as totalled or severely damaged.

carfax is fine.
you guys just dont understand what its supposed to do.
its not for checking "QUALITY HISTORY" on the car,
it only checks title history.
if a car wasn't issued a salvage title.. its not going to show up on carfax.
I should also note, that a title WILL SAY salvaged on it if it is a salvaged title,
so just ask the seller to show you his title!
I didnt know this.. until I bought a car and looked at the title,
seeing that word SALVAGE was probably the single worst moment of my life.
(losing many many thousands of dollars hurts bigtime)

yeah I pointed this out when the last person did the "free carfax" post... My car had been stolen... reported as such and recovered... it was reported to the insurance company AND the police...
NO record of it at all...
It also stated it was a 1 owner car and I'm the 3rd that I know of.

not if the title has been washed by sending it to florida and getting it titled there.

What the hell ??? how can they take him to jail ??!?! that happened to a kid in my area and they just impounded his car and then ended up giving it back to him ( with the stolen motor still in it) and yes this was in CA ? i guess the dont mess around in texas... good luck with that, if hes truly innocent then he will be fine, as long as he didnt know motor was stolen. Man that sucks, good luck....
and this goes to proving 2b46010's Carfax point.... the thieves get away with this one while someone innocent gets sucked into the thieves mess up for not being a gnarly investigator about his ****..... sucks, thats got to be a hard lesson to learn

some states, like idaho, give clean titles to totalled cars that are worth less than 6 grand. my friend bought a wrecked 95 cx, which is obviously not worth very much, and it has a clean title and no report of a wreck on carfax.
