car wont start :(
my civic has been siting for about 6 months now and i tried to jump it today but it wont start.. everything turns on inside but when i turn the key it cranks really slow i get like a quater of a crank and it sounds like it just dies out why wont it start?
update
ok well after the car that was helping me jump it for like 10 minutes it finally cranked and turned on for about 5 seconds
and the altinator belt was screaming and it turned off and there was smoke from the belt and it wont start again..
so my friend told me just to get a new battery and it should work fine but i dont know now when i try to turn it on it just makes a clicking noise

Re: car wont start :(
definitely have the battery charged then see if it starts
your local auto store can charge it and let you know if its a bad battery
as for the smoke where exactly was it coming of off?

Re: car wont start :(
battery probably has a bad cell. check the postive cable on the alternator make sure its tight and check the belt tension, see where the smoke was coming from. could be an old belt or stuck alt pulley or something.

If its moving, do you hear a screeching sound like a belt that is not tensioned or a bearing going bad? What does your belt look like? Usually, with the engine off (after having it on for a few seconds) you can smell burning rubber from the belt, and the belt/pulley will be glazed, etc. Check out your belts (both sides), and try to see if you can get someone to pin point where the smoke is coming from. Maybe turn it on for a second or two, while someone looks, and then shut it down, repeat, etc.

OK, turn the vehicle off, and feel the belt, is it hot? If you reach underneath the belt (splined alt drive pulley side - bottom of belt) and rub your fingers along it do you smell the burnt rubber or do you see black particles? Can you pinpoint which belt? Also, is the belt loose? Make sure its tight. Does it looked cracked or glazed?

Is your PS low on fluid? Has the pump pulley bearing seized up? Is the P/S pulley turning, any noises like a bearing, dragging, metallic sound? Are you sure its not the A/C tensioner pulley/belt making the noise? If not, I would remove the P/S belt, or at least loosen it up, and try spinning the P/S pulley. Do you feel a drag? Another thing you can do is take the P/S belt off and out of the way, turn over the engine and see if the sound/smoking goes away. If not its not the P/S belt and you will have to keep narrowing it down.

Sounds like from sitting for so long...your battery died and your alternator seized up. You'll need a new battery, alternator and alternator belt.
The alternator may be salvageable, you'll have to free up the bearings inside it. An impact gun works nicely to get it spinning, careful applications of pb blaster will help too. If that doesn't work, replace the alternator.

That would be the source of your belt burning. You may want to pull the alternator and gently try breaking the pulley/shaft loose. I doubt the bearings froze up, because they are sealed. It may be the brushes that are "stuck". If you can't get it to break loose on the bench, you will have to pick up a new one or reliable used one.

Well what kind of shape is your old one in? Is it cracked or burned up? I probably would invest in a new one given they don't really cost that much, plus its peace of mind, last thing you want to do is eat a belt in the middle of nowhere.
