car wont run unless push started
I was driving my car when it just died on me. It was still running but when i pushed the gas pedal it would just kinda die out and when I came to a stop it died and would not start again. I checked for fuel and its getting plenty. I checked for spark and it wasnt appearing to get any. but when i was towing it home I put it in gear and let out the clutch it started up and ran just fine but when I pushed the gas pedal it died out on me again. I have no idea what could cause this.
setup:
95 civic cx

Re: car wont run unless push started (extrmeboost)
if its a spark prob there are a number of areas that could have caused the problem. start by checking ur battery connections, excessive corrosion can cause the alternator to fail in creating a charge and or distrupt the circuit during normal driving. i'd start here, its free.
it sounds to me as though ur alternator may not be charging correctly, as to when you step on it, output voltage of the alt is not great enough to provide the needed spark. and when stoped it has not charged the battery enough. but when let stand or under tow enough of a charge as be gathered in the battery to start it shortly before the battery is again drained.
however i would check ur plugs, extreme errosion could have greated too large of a plug gap. damaged wires? check cap and rotor. igniter you should be able to tell by ur tach (whether it jumps or not). and finally check the out voltage on the alternator with a multimeter. i would recommend against throwing parts at any car, attempt to diagnose it before you just get a new alternator, there not that cheap.

Re: car wont run unless push started (the reid)
I happen to have another alternator but i wonder if thats the problem, cuz the car wont start even with jumper cables. I dunno but Ill slap that other alternator on and see if it works.

i have the same problem in my 92 sedan. At first it would not start unless it was jumped but once it started it ran fine. Tonight while i was driving all the lights went dim and the car started to die. I jabbed the gas and managed to keep the engine running. but shortly after that it happened again but this time it died. I tried to jump start it and that didnt work. I had to take the battery out of my friends car to start it and as soon as i switched back to my battery it died like 2 mins later. I suspect the alternator but id like to hear what you guys have to say
