Default Car surging past few days, now wont start...

Hey guys,
My "grocery getter" is a 95 civic ex (d16z6) completely stock motor. The past few days it had been surging a bit when cold. Nothing too dramatic just between 1-2k right when i started it. Every once and awhile at lower rpms it would hesitate a little bit too. Last night i was driving and the car just stalled out, and wouldnt turn back on. WHen i try to turn it back on it sounds like it wants to turn over, but just won;t. I reset the ecu, the fuel pump is working (i can hear it turn on) and if i put it in gear without touching the clutch, and turn the key it will jump forward. The oil was a bit low, but i am assuming that since the car will move by itself when in gear, that the motor did not seize?
Any suggestions on what it could be or what i can check?
When i get home in a few hours i am going to change the spark plugs and do a compression check. I have only ever dealt with b series motors before, and i know the wires i have laying around dont fit. Any one know if a distr. off of a b18 will fit my d16? Just off hand??

check the coolant level. make sure there is no air in the system. also check for vaccuum leaks. and clean out the IACV. these are some of the most common causes of a surge. as for the b series dist. it will not bolt on as far as i know. if the dist is obd1 the internals are the same so you could just swap them over. hope this helps

i used a light gun and checked for spark. Nothing at all on the wires.. i changed the rotor, cap, ecu, timing belt... checked all the connections and still nothing... what else could it be??

if you have no spark then you need a dist. like i said before take apart the b18 dist and swap the internals.

Your ignitor coil in the distributor is bad. Replace that and you will be good to go.
