Car Shutsdown Electrical Systems When Turning On?
I got a good old 95 Civic SI Coupe in the Northern part of Canada where it just started snowing...
Well we got our first snowstorm just yesterday and the car started to misbehave. So when I go to turn the car on the entire electrical grid (lights, srs, radio, horn, etc..) shuts off just when I'm turning the key to turn the engine on. Its a complete blackout and no electrical power whatsoever. Even though before turning the car on I had all electrical systems up and running(SRS/fuel pumped was primed/dash-lights turned on as usual). It was like a breaker went off and shut the system down. So I quickly checked the fuses (in the engine compartment) and they were all in good condition, no burnt ones out. So I just unhooked the negative battery terminal and put it back on and wouldn't you know it, I had power again in the car and it turned on with no problems at all.
Now I know it cant be the battery since I replaced it no more then 1 1/2 - 2 years ago. So could it be the alternator? And if it is why would disconnecting the battery and connecting it make the car run again? I also replaced the distributor 1 year ago just in case that could be the problem.
Another weird thing is that whenever it does this to me and its snowing, one part of the hood has no snow on top of it. It looked like it melted off on the right upper-side. Even though the car was off nearly all night and there is a thick coat of snow evenly spread on the rest of the vehicle.
Thanks, any input would be great!
