You need to have that sensor functional for two reasons.
1: So your ECM knows that there is enough oil pressure available to supply the entire VTEC system for proper operation.
2: If such a loss of oil pressure does occur before or after VTEC, you will not further starve the base engine of oil. (IE mains, rods, rocker jets) The engine will switch VTEC off.

Mine worked after breaking that switch. You just lose the protection that this switch gives you should your oil pressure drop. I wouldn't advise driving long without it (especially hitting VTEC), but the car will run fine without it until you get a replacement.

The PCM requires that input to turn VTEC on. Either you have bypassed that switch, or your using some sort of aftermarket VTEC control. (IE Chipped ECU or VAFC comes to mind)
Hell VAFC's will turn VTEC on when the car is not moving... LOL

I have a Hondata, so that may be it. I freaked out when I busted the switch and figured VTEC wouldn't engage. But yeah, mine did (I tried it once and backed off). Whether or not VTEC engages or not, the car will run long enough to him to get his replacement switch.
