Car: [Mom's] 1994 Honda Civic LX 4dr, automatic 4speed, approx 80k miles

Previous Issues: Random Overheating [replaced $500 worth of parts attempting to fix] and supposedly mechs are saying its a cracked head-gasket [oil is leaking into radiator fluid]. A new problem has arrived;

What happened?: Sitting at a red light, in 4th gear, the RPM's dropped from about 1000 to 0, then jumped up to 2000, and myself and my mom we're partially freaked by this, and thanks to her quick reflexes she then puts her foot on the gas (and brake) to keep RPM's about 2000.

She kept it at 2000 until the light changed, and we proceeded to drive as normal. When we got home, she drove up next to the mailbox briefly, and nothing happened. She changes it into Reverse and there is a light "clunk" like feeling and sound. reverses, drives into the driveway, and sits..

a second later, it dips the RPM's down and then brings em up high, and in a pattern, almost like someone revving the engine (she didn't touch the gas pedal!!) it continues, she begins the freak out, and i step outside to try to listen to where it's coming from. oh yea, and we smelled some kind of burning/liquid smell (i think tranny fluid) while we were home (mailbox, reverse, parked).

so, wut's the deal? i believe its the tranny.. but i cant figure out what it would be. it drove fine, it was just while parked it was funny. she talked to her car-worker who knows about the same amount about cars as i do, he also thinks its tranny.

what do you honda-pro's think? btw, im on my way to work, so i wont be able to answer any questions about the situation until about 5-6 hours from now. [its 4:37PM PST]

If there's oil in the coolant than your headgasket is indeed damaged and you need to get that replaced before anything else happens.

it might be the tps(throttle positioning sensor) nothing major. relax man you'll be fine. And dont race your moms car
