Car Overheating...not thermostat
I have i 93 CX 1.5 stock. When the car heats up, the temp guage will travel almost to hot, and then drop down to normal REALLY quick. I replaced the radiator about 3 months ago and just replaced the thermostat. Also, the overflow tank gets full and looks like it leaks out of the cap. Not sure if its a cracked coolant jacket or what. ????????

it does both. Seems like it acts up more when i'm driving/accelerating. The fan works, but i was thinking its something else because of how quickly the guage will drop. It was doing it tonight, but after i added some coolant it was ok. Not sure why its overflowing the coolant either in the catch tank.

sounds like it may have colant leak when u trun on ur heat does the temp gag drop
if so its cuz ur low on coolant then u got a leak try putting coolant presser gag on it
fill it with coolant aand look for leak

I would check your radiator cap or for a leak on one of the coolant lines. I had a similar problem, my temp would go up really high and then drop all of a sudden. turns out I had a cracked line that was leaking coolant so i was runnning low. If the overflow trank is getting really full than the only thing that would effect that would be the radiator cap. It's a cheap check/fix and if that doesn't work check for a leak somewhere. Hope this helps.

thanks for the info. just curious too why the hose that connects to the thermostat housing isn't getting warm when the top hose is.

i had this same prob, if i stay under light throttle everything stayed fine but when i got in it it would heat up, and when i got off the gas it would drop back 2 normal. Its an air pocket in the system somewhere. If u have a bleader valve on your thermastat housing let the car warm up and open it for about 2 min u should be fine afted that

just bled the system and it seems to be working properly. Got a pressure tester also, but couldn't use it cuz they gave me the wrong one. Oh well, thanks for the help.

same thing happened to me when I bought my cx couple months ago. I troubleshooted by changing the thermostat and radiator but it kept over heating. Brought it to the shop and found out that the engine head gasket was burnt so I guess air leaked in. There were never any problems with overheating ever since the engine head got it shaved and a new gasket was put in.
