What do you mean not legit? Is it a stolen motor? If so report the ****** you bought it from and have him arrested.

Are you talking about your car, or someone elses car?
Either way the state patrol does not know if the motor is stolen or not, they have to run a check and it takes more than just calling in. Likely if they have suspicion that there are stolen parts then they can tow/impound the car and posess it. If that happens they will try to build a case against you and you have to prove that you bought the car like that, or that the parts in the car are legit. A lawyer will help speed up the process.

If you could take a pic send it to the highway patrol and see if anything comes up. if he has the motor you could take it there and explain to them whats up.
Also if its a 96(?) and up there should be a VIN of the car on the motor and tranny, you could run a carfax with that and see what happend with the car.
