Car idles real low and then dies
i dont have tach. to tell you the exact rpm .. but a couple of times now after driving for a while, When coming to a stop my car will idle very low and then die ..
One time I had to jump start it, And the other time i just waited a few seconds.. But then car would still idle low so i tryed to keep the rpms up.
Im thinking this could be my alternator.. I can here a pretty consitant tick coming from my alternators area.
If i go get a voltage meter, Whats the proper way to test my battery and the alternator ?
Any more questions to help me solve this just ask.
Thanks in advance
The cars a 98 ek Y7 with 110k miles
updated summary:
-Car will not turn on unless jump started from another car
-car will completly turn off occasionaly at stops if i dont keep the rpms up or when car is turned off and i try to turn it back on
-battery and alt. were checked at auto zone and the tests came out that they were fine
-Unless jump started NOTHING on the car will turn on
-when i put the keys in the car will beep (like normally when you put the keys in) but only a few times and will quikly stop resulting with in no power what so ever
-NO cels
-After jump starting car must be ran for a couple minutes or else it will turn off again at idle
-Car is a theft reco. if that matters .. But im not sure exaclty what theyhad to put back in or what was stolen.

Re: Car idles real low and then dies
It can be a vacuum issue.
My car had burnt oil for a short period of time.
I clean out IACV, PCV, hoses, and the hole in throttle body for the MAP sensor.
It resolved my idle issues.

Re: Car idles real low and then dies
Had they some problem with my Y8.
But never got the issue solved
But The idle drops when i brake. So It was a vacuum leak i thought but It wasn't just that.
Check All your Vacuum lines
Clean Your IACV, TB & And Adjust FITV
Burp your coolant Cause Air could cause idle change when it reaches IACV
check battery for corrosion
Is it a Auto or Manual
If it is a manual When you disengage clutch or pop into neutral, Hold throttle a little so car doesn't die for temporarily Cure.
If It wasn't for my FITV my car would probably die every time I Cranked it.

Re: Car idles real low and then dies
Just solved this issue myself, you need to check and set your base idle CORRECTLY to the proper rpm or you'll just be chasing your tail. A vacuum leak would make it surge not die. Unless it was big enough.. if its THAT big of a leak you should be able to hear it. Hook up a scanner and adjust your idle screw to 750-800rpm and if you want reset the computer. I never did and mine fixed my "almost dying while braking" and power loss issues.
By the way theres zillions of articles on how to check the charging system. Put a multimeter on your battery terminals and check for more than 12 volts. Your idling problem is not because of your alternator though..
Dont just read and read but go out and DO, doing will get more solved then the whirlwind of thinking about the problem and what it "could be"

Re: Car idles real low and then dies
Sounds to me like you have more than one problem . Set the multimeter to volts and check for 12-14 stable volts. Put the red multimeter wire on the positive battery terminal and the black multimeter wire on the ground terminal of your battery. If the voltage is jumping around everywhere you either have a failing alternator or battery or a loose battery ground. Check the easy **** first.

Re: Car idles real low and then dies
Battery light should be on if its a bad alternator.
12V+ with car off
13.50V+ with car running.
Those are the Range if you check
But I doubt battery is gonna give you Idle Problem

Re: Car idles real low and then dies
had car jumped so i could get down to auto zone
Had battery and alternator tested.. Results were good
on the way theyre ( 1 mile or so ) car died at a traffic light.
Waited a few seconds
Car started up fine
drove my car for another few hours making occasional10-30 min. stops ,with no problems what so ever.
then i parked my car again for about 30 mins and it wouldnt start.
( i dont think i added when it dies, it not just motor.. Its everything)
If my idle screw was off dont you think my car would still turn on power ? like turn it back on for radio and what not.
Im thinking about just taking it down to honda... Any one know how much that cost to have them look at it ?

Re: Car idles real low and then dies
Have you tried cleaning out the air filter and intake and checking the idle control valve the last thing would be checking the throttle body. Highly doubt it would be battery if its only doing it at stops. Does it stall when you just let it sit there?

Re: Car idles real low and then dies
after a while ( car always has to be jump started now) .. The car will just completely turn off (electricity and everything) at stops or after the car is turned off.
Im trying to be as elaberate as possible for you guys to help me out, But iv never seen something like this so im really sure what to check for.
Tell me if im wrong but two of you guys have suggested idle control now.. But i dont see how that could effect the cars power not turning on.
Im guessing it could be some kind of wiring or something
A few days ago i had my lanyard for my car keys wraped around the steering comunm so it woudlnt hang down.. And it felt like it got stuck in some wires ( i dont have a steering column cover) and my car turned off for a second while i was turning.. Not sure if that has anything to do with it, But all the wires in the ignition still look intact

Re: Car idles real low and then dies
Could be quite a few more things if its electrical, i was giving you the simple/hopefull things to check. probably wont be the icv or intake if it wont start at all. I say get it started take it to a garage and find out what the problem is, almost everywhere will check it for you and give you a quote for free. Then when you know what the problem is you can fix it yourself.

Re: Car idles real low and then dies
I had a problem where my rpms would drop so low the car would die whenever i pressed the clutch in, it turned out to be a dizzy top dead center sensor gone bad, so Im just throwing out some things to check on as well.

Re: Car idles real low and then dies
when the car is on and running, if everything electric works(lights, etc) then it shouldnt be the altenator, sounds like ur batteries screwed and u just need to go get a new one, as far as it idlin low i would check things like ur throttle body, make sur ur idler is set right, maybe get a new filter for ur intake

Re: Car idles real low and then dies
altenator could be bad, or belt loose causing it not to charge up
battery could bad
check all your grounds again, make sure u have good ground
check to see if your battery terminal clamps are on tight
idle screw might need adjustment
how is your idle at idle.. jumpy, normal?

I feel like some people just post , To post.. Like they have nothing better to do :l
Not becasue they ACTAULLY have any expierenced useful information

Re: Car idles real low and then dies
did you ever get this problem solved? i was having this problem also. I found that my ignition switch was bad, it was loose and barely making a connection. If my keys moved just slightly it would cause the car to die, power and all. It was going on for a month or so when one day my knee hit my keys and the car completely died. so i started it again and barely moved the key back towards me (i'm talking just a hair)and it shut down again.got a new switch from autozone with keys and everything. i hope this may help you.
