Car dies, weak battery?
Alright guys, my car starts up fine on a cold start but when i drive it for the day and shut it off and go to start it again it doesn't start, when it does my rpms are very low and get lower and lower close to 0 then dies.. then starts up fine again then dies.. could it be battery or alternator?

as it gets lower does it feel like its misfiring? if so it sounds like a crank position sensor going open circuit. to test it, remove it form the vehicle, and apply an ohmeter, and hit it with a hair dryer, see what the numbers do. if your not sure ost the results, and the rate of change and ill help

no it stays on but i have to drive off to keep it on, the first couple of meters driving off it feels like power is cutting off then eventually comes back to normal after driving awhile.

check ur IAC (idle air flow), it could be clogged up, or maybe a combination of the throttle plate and IAC being dirty. To clean ur IAC just take it off and very gently and lightly spay some brake clean on it and gently wipe it off, this may not fix it and may damage it if done incorrectly, but u should see some build up when u remove it, and the throttle plate brake clean and a rag and wipe it. See if this helps. let me know.

Wow, I love the answers people give. Before you do anything try driving it to your local pep boys, autozone, etc, and have them test your battery and alternator. If that checks out THEN start looking into the other stuff mentioned.

Re: Car dies, weak battery? (mikeycivic)
Well i live in canada or no pep boys or autozone here, I'll get the battery/alt tested right away because i had to get dropped off to work today due to car not starting just starts and dies right away then it just cranks after a few tries
my car started up good couple weeks ago but i always had a low idle problem, already cleanned
ivac
fitv
throttle body
adjusted idle screw
still get low idle :S

Re: (RDAYA0)
if you want to check if your alternator is bad, turn on the car and disconnect the red wire from the battery and if the car turns off rights away then you alternator is bad

Re: (civic2489)
just tested the alt out, car started up right away this morning? then i took red cable off and it ran with no hesitation for about 30 seconds then i turned off the car, hmm...seems good now, i just found out that a open wire which is the wire that hooks up my vtec spool valve was touching the metal body of my car inside near the ecu i just put some electrical tape around it...could that woulda been my problem? ill look further more.. thanks

Re: (RDAYA0)
well, i didnt read thru all of this, but did you check the tps sensor?
unhook the tps while it is running, but make sure someone is in the driver seat ready to shut it off. if the tps is bad, it will not change the idle, but if it is good, im pretty sure it will just rev all the way up.
if any damage happens, im not responsible!

i'm thinking it's ur battery, have it recharge or if it's not good, get a new one. mine's doing the same thing, sometimes it'll just idle very low and go back up. sometimes it'll just die and i'll try starting it and it will crank but won't start, i then have to turn off my deck and wait for a while then it'll work again. i'm assuming it's ur battery.
