Car becoming more and more difficult to start...
Hey guys, I did a search but it seems that everyone else was in a different situation than I am now, their cars did not start at all, while mine does, but it has a slight pause.
So I'll get in the car, turn the key....nothing. Sometimes it will start after 3 seconds, but one time got especially bad and I had to try over and over again to get it.
Other times, it will start right up like it's supposed to.
I called my mechanic up and he said (without doing a diagnosis) that it could be the fuel pump, the starter, or the injectors, all of which would be expensive to fix.
The predicament I'm in, is that I plan on going turbo in the next few months, so naturally the fuel pump and the injectors will have to be replaced with higher performance ones. I don't want to fix the oem ones and have them replaced, only to have to replace them again soon after.
So that's what brings me here, I need opinions or solutions on you guys have experienced with your own cars, thanks in advance!

see if u can hear the fuel pump click when u first turn the key to the on position. back then mine wouldnt click, and the motor wouldnt start. it usually happens during the cold weather. the problem was the main relay. take your main relay and inspect very closely to see if there are tiny cracks around the soldering. solder them back together and see if it starts

Sorry guys, I guess I wasn't very descriptive at all!
Well, I'll turn the key all the way, the engine won't turn-over or anything. The mechanic said to turn the key to "On" and "Off" repeatedly 3 times, and that has worked...but I still think it's a temporary solution.
Next time I'll listen for a "clicking" noise from the fuel pump, I haven't noticed anything like that before.
What's this "main relay"? Where is it located so I can take a gander at it?
Thanks for the quick responses too guys!

if it cranks the same speed every time you can rule out the starter. Bad starters will usually start clicking when u turn the key and sometimes smell bad. I would think fuel pressure would be a major cause all other things being fine.

I haven't had a chance to check out the main relay yet...but it DOES start after a few tries, can I rule out the relay due to that fact? As for fuel pressure...would that mean a bad fuel pump or bad injectors?
If so...how long do you think I have before complete failure? I have DSM 450cc injectors, and I'm ordering a Walbro fuel pump and I don't want to replace the stock ones before I put in the turbo counterparts.

If you are running an integra motor in a civic, meaning you are using an integra ecu with a civic engine harness...you need to do the fuel pump pin fix on one of the ecu plugs. forgot which one it is, but i remember doing it to my boys car. you gotta take out one of the pins from the harness plug and relocate it into a different slot.
this is only for obd2 cars. not sure what your setup is cuz you didnt mention it.

I'm running the good ol' D16y8 beast, so no ecu faults here. I would say that the problem is more common when the car is cold or has been inactive for more than a few hours...I don't remember this happening last winter though...and it's not THAT cold yet.
Battery is about a month old, alternator is a possibility, but you'd figure that it would at least try and crank...not just lights and nothing.

when i had problems with the main relay, it would start after a few tries too. i would put in the key, take out the key wait a few mins, and then repeat until it started. just look under the dashboard and pop out the relay to inspect. it takes 1 min

Re: (dxhatch92)
x2 - more likely to be main relay, My car used to struggle to start after long drives and I would end up getting stuck at the petrol station for 10mins!
I re-soldered the dry joints and never had a problem since.

Alright, I'll give the main relay a check after I get better, I got freakin' pwned at work today when a huge steel beam decided it wanted to say hello to my back.
I'll keep you guys updated, thank you.
