Cant pass emissions. already searched, no luck.
What up everyone, just bought a civic with a gsr swap, and i failed emissions twice already. I just need to get my registered asap, since the tabs are expired and im already late on registration, damn fees are going to add up.
a little info about the car.
97 civic with 00 gsr swap (intake, header, exhaust/test pipe, no cat) No CEL.
First test results.
HC(PPM) Limit - 180
Cruise Emissions- 292 = Fail.
CO(%) Limit- 1.3
Cruise emissions- 10.43= Fail.
Second test (only change was messed with timing)
HC(PPM) Limit- 180
Cruise emissions- 236= Still fail, but lower.
CO(%) Limit- 1.3
Cruise emissions- 10.43- same, Fail.
im aware my car is running rich, what are some things i can do to lower Hc, CO levels? kind of low on money so dont want to drop a ton and still not pass the test.
Thanks!

you test obd2 cars with tailpipe sniffer in oreegon?
dont they have the obd2 scanner?
im from WA thats what they do here.
well first of all a cat needs to be there, you will NOT pass anything without a cat.
make sure timing is set at OEM specs,
check spark plugs and spark plug wires, get new wires if needed( measure them with multimeter)
check distributor cap and rotor for wear
what ecu are you running with that gsr?
check your O2 sensor also. if the engine is running bad it will damage the O2 sensor which in turn will send out incorrect air/fuel ratio and make it run even worse.

You're gonna need a cat to pass, methinks
(unless you fool with the computer, put in a dummy O2 sensor, pay some money under the table, etc)

A catalytic converter is a device used to convert toxic exhaust emissions from an internal combustion engine into non-toxic substances
it converts the three main pollutants in automobile exhaust: an oxidising reaction converts carbon monoxide(CO) and unburned hydrocarbons(HC), and a reduction reaction converts oxides of nitrogen (NOx) to produce carbon dioxide(CO2), nitrogen(N2), and water(H2O).[1]
cheaper to go get one at a local exhaust shop installed and pass than spend money trying to do backdoor deals.

How often you do emission test in OR ? At least they are not like here full of BS even Diesel are required to do "SMOG CHECK" emission test.

Car doesn't seem to be running correctly, catalytic converter or not... I mean with a catalytic converter at 80% efficiency, you would still be outputting 56HC which is far too high. If this car was a brand new car from that model year with a catalytic converter, your HC emissions would be about 0, despite the 80% efficient catalyst.

*cough* iso-heet *cough*
but seriously. i just had same numbers almost exactly on my del sol
my timing was waaay off
my O2 sensor was faulty
and my spark plugs were fouled along with burned out cap and rotor.
timing and O2 sensor will make your engine run like sht

Possibly dumb question:
That's a GSR engine in that car....are you running premium gas in that thing?
Not sure if regular gas in it could make it run crappy enough to fail emissions, but it's worth a shot if all else fails
^^;

hey do ur emission plug in the computer or do they run ur car like a dyno and get the reading....i had the same problem like u when i had a built lsv and had to take it for a emission and fail all 3 pass...i was asking all around and one of my guys that own a shop that work with muscle car told me to run 104 octane booster in my gas and run it for a bit and rev it so ur motor gets warm up and then go do the emission..i did that to my car and i PASS the emission test!!!so try that and see if it works for you..b4 u spend more money just to pass the emission...
