tried that, seems like the shifter gets stuck on something and is just shy of engaging reverse....has anyone had this problem?

Get under the car and check if anythings wrong with the shift linkage.

if you put it as far as it'll go, and pull it towards reverse (not incredibly hard, but with significant pressure) while letting out on the clutch slowly, does it slide in? Does it go in with the car off?

you know what it is.. its the synchro mech and the nipkin valve not in synce. lol just playing i would say to take a look underneath the car to make sure the lincage isnt messed up. i used to have the same problem in my 91 si but when i was slightly moving it would slip in. dunno.. good luck

i had my buddy, spin the wheel with the front end off the ground while i tried to put it into reverse. I could hear the gears grinding and almost going in, but it just couldnt reach all the way. I was underneath looking/messing with the linkage, didnt help. also, do you guys have a lot of play vertically, up/down, with the shifter in its seat?
thanks,

You have something horribly wrong. Fix it immediately.

yeah up and down movements with shift lincage isnt right. you should only feel forward and back.

release the clutch slowly and keep a constant pressure on the lever. U can give it a tiny bit of gas too. Works for when mine kinda wants to get into reverse without fully going in.
