Five days ago I bought a H2B-swapped Del Sol, and I've slowly been fixing the car's numerous problems, one of which is a bad driver's side axle.

I got the axle out of the hub, and the CV bearings just fell to the ground as the boot came off of the end of the tranny. I then pulled away the boot to find a rag wrapped up in there...apparently the previous owner thought rags were a suitable replacement for axle grease and a sealed boot.

So here is what I've got out of the car on the bottom, versus the new (well, remanufactured) axle on top.



My first question is how do I get that remaining part out of the intermediate shaft? I tried prying against it with a prybar against the intermediate shaft bracket, and the intermediate shaft seems to move outward towards the wheel while the axle remains locked in place.

My second question is is that notched ring near the outside of the removed broken axle for ABS? The car does not have ABS. And if it's an ABS axle, can I use the new non-ABS axle?

you can take the intermediate shaft off and hammer it out, or you can hammer it out while it's in the car, if you remove it, it's a hell of a lot easier

and abs or non abs doesn't matter, axles are the same, just that abs has a ring, if you car has no abs, it wont matter anyways

Thanks for the reply...I'm gonna go try to hammer it out right now. Will post back with results shortly.

i think the intermediate shaft is only three bolts, would recommend that because axles SUCK!!!! you can push, kick and yank for an hour, then lean on it and it falls into place!!!

I managed to get the old one out with a hammer and pry bar, and got the new one back in (after some grinding of the block/oil pan to ensure the clamp doesn't break off of the new axle.) Thanks for the help guys.

I also adjusted my coilovers while I was at it...I'm really enjoying how much easier this car is to work on than my Celica.

It's too bad I can't drive it because I removed a fitting from my FPR and need to get a plug for it, along with plugs for some other stuff I removed.
