yeah a better impact. lol my old impact stopped taking them off so I bought a nitro cat. no probs takes about 2 seconds.
When the motor is out of the car there is not much you can do because you loose your leverage by ur motor not being secured down.
Sounds like you have air at your house. Try and find someone with a nice impact and borrow it for half hour or so.
good luck, I know your pain.

Re: (longshot)
screwdriver in the flywheel and a ratchet with a long handle - then you can use a pipe or something (slide it over the end of the ratchet) to extend it.
Remember, the formula for torque is the radius off the pivot of rotation multiplied by force, so if you double the length of the pivot of rotation (the socket), say you have 16Nm of force and .5M from the pivot of rotation (socket) you have 8Nm of torque - but if you put an extension on there and double its size, it'll also double (16*1=16Nm of torque).
Gotta extend that end man, increases your torque a great deal, and its your only way seeing as you can't increase the force if you're trying your hardest.

Re: (jimmy o.)
Or you can buy a Honda crankshaft pulley bolt remover..... its the reason the crack shaft has the giant 50mm hex on it. go to ebay cost like 30 shipped or local parts shops might have it.

Re: (slvrcvc93)
The crankshaft pulleys with the hex insert in them, were they common in the US? here in Canada i've only ever seen one once, on a d-series anyway it was on a D16Z6, every other one just have a round hole, but they had several small holes near the outside so you could put a small bar in and jam it up against the frame rail. In this guys case i don't think either will be much help as the engine is already out of the car.

Re: (94EG8)
i just use a good snapON impact wrench and crank the air pressure up as high as it will go. it will knock the bolt loose really quick just remember to turn the PSI back down before tigthening anything down.LOL
ive pulled them off two motors now within 2seconds.... no bracing done at all just the impact wrench and lots of PSI.

Re: (addiction2bass)
i think your best bet is to take it to a machine shop or some shop that has a big air compressor with very high psi...like a diesel shop...and have them take it out for u..

Just...no. Go huff Raid.
Is there any other way to remove a timing belt besides taking the crank pulley off? I'd think you could just loosen the idler pulley and slip the thing off. To hell with speculating, I'll just try it if I don't get a reply. I don't exactly have like $200 to spend on an impact wrench since the engine I need to remove the crank pulley on doesn't have the hex shaped hole.

Re: (thumper64)
I have the same problem, and no holes on the crank shaft. I've got amost 200 PSI at my Snap-on impact gun, and mine won't budge either! I was thinking of taking a bottle torch to the bolt to try and get it to expand more than the shaft.....

you can do that, but u would have to cut the plastic pieces off from behind the crank pulley...

Re: (hard_boiled_EG)
and if you do cut them now your belt is exposed with the rest of the stuff it covers like the tensioner and the water pump.
you can out a torch to it but not for to long because then you will have to change the seal on the other side so it all depends if the engine isn't out of the car take it to a local shop let them try to take it out.
Its cool that you have Air tools buy remember the have compressors that will put alot more force on that bolt than the little compressor you have I have a mac 1/2 Air-gun it does 400 foot lbs in reverse and 250 forward and I still use my tool to take out the crank bolt.

Your supposed to torque them down to around 185 ft/lbs anyway when you tighten them.
Borrow an impact from someone you know is the best thing I can tell you.

When I took mine off, the 350ftlb 3/8 impact wouldn't budge it. Had to use a 650ftlb 1/2" gun... to give you an idea of how tough they can be sometimes.

Re: (Vindicator9000)
My nitro cat is rated to something like 900 or 1000 ft/lbs reverse so yeah I don't have any problems anymore with crank bolts or axle nuts.
Plus is was like 100.00 cheaper than the ingersol rand. But you get what you pay for goes for tools as well as parts.
275.00 impact is better than 100.00 for 5 piece set impacts lol.

My dad's old Chicago Pneumatic 1/2 inch impact took mine off today, though I had to crank the pressure up to around 180psi.
Also, if the engine is out and you can take the plastic off, you can just loosen the tensioner and slide the belt out from under the crank pulley. I'm changing my front main seal though, so I just tried that for ***** and giggles.
