Re: can't downshift to 2nd...is my tranny busted? (screech)
no, there's no grinding at all. i searched and found out people recommend the gm syncromesh but in my case, my tranny isn't grinding. i don't want to spend $40 on tranny fluid.
i've been driving like this for a couple months already. pisses me off but i can't do anything.

how fast are you going, when you try to down shift into 2nd?
any funny noises coming from the tranny?
cable or hydro tranny?
does it gring going from 1st to 2nd gear, at high rpm(near rev limit)?
it could be many things, busted PP, bad second gear synchro, worn shift fork, etc.. i can tell you from my own experience, that the only two times that i have had this problem has been when i busted my pp. and the other time, was when i installed my shift linkage the wrong way(long story)

are you matching your revs, when you try to down shift into 2nd. do you(bleep) hit the gas, right before you downshift into 2nd. doing that, will make your synchros line up!

damm, you got me scrathing my brain. i hate to ask you this, but do you rev match on every other downshift, i.e 5-4, 4-3? you might need to remove your tranny to find out what's wrong, the only thing i can think about is a broken clutch spring(if your clutch has springs), or loose flywheel bolts(but that would affect every gear)

Re: can't downshift to 2nd...is my tranny busted? (smokey2.0)
Can you shift from 4-3, and THEN 3-2??
And also, even if you flush the tranny fluid, that's just a temporary fix and won't help much if something else is wrong.
(unless if it's really the case, and you haven't flusehd in 2 years..)
there are a lot of possibilities in your situation.
-You might have to bleed your clutch
-You might need a new clutch slave or clutch master cylinder
-Maybe your 2nd gear synchro is worn
Who knows.. Good luck on finding out, but don't come to conclusions and do things that people on here tell you just because they had the same problem.
It's like somebody telling you to replace your IACV because of a starting problem (which helped them, but not necessarily is going to help you because in your case it may be the engine temp sensor and not the IACV)
Just check it out before doing any work on it. Good luck

Re: can't downshift to 2nd...is my tranny busted? (The HamsterBall)
i know what you mean. i can downshift from 5-4, 4-3, easily. but i can't get it into 2nd gear without yanking on it hard. and yes, i do rev match on every other downshift.
tranny fluid was flushed a couple weeks ago. the clutch fluid i just did about 10 minutes ago but the problem was still there.
i have an extra slave cylinder sitting around i'll probably switch that tomorrow. anything else i should look at?
i'm leaning towards the 2nd gear synchro right now.

this is what i do to rev-match...let me know if it's not correct. i basically rev the motor in neutral to match the rpm to the lower gear that i'm going to be in.

REV MATCHING:
When taking off from a stop and then going up through the gears, steps 1,2,6,7 above are the normal shifting method for each gear change. The synchro mesh are more than enough to control the intermediate shaft speed. The engine will passively rev match itself because it slows down naturally and this is appropriate when shifting up.
When down shifting, the engine needs to spin faster as it engages the new gear. This can be achieved by 'blipping' the throttle as the transmission passes through neutral. If the engine isn't manually sped up by the driver, it will be sped up by the driveline when the clutch is re engaged. This can be OK for normal street driving, but if the car is cornering near the limit this can upset the suspension and the tire adhesion.
The synchromesh are usually adequate intermediate shaft control when down shifting one or two gears. Aggressive downshifts (like a 5 2 shift from high speed) can benefit by using double clutch shifting to assist the synchro's. Shifting into first gear in a hard corner is nearly impossible without double clutching (this is useful for those really tight hairpins, especially if they exit uphill).
hope it helps you see if you're doing it right

Re: can't downshift to 2nd...is my tranny busted? (smokey2.0)
1. clutch in out of the gear
2. clutch out blip the throttle
3. clutch in, and into gear
4. let out the clutch.

well if that slave cylinder doesn't workk.. it might be your synchro
and don't YANNKK it in gear.. if it won't go.. don't force it..
bad for your tranny.
i would say, don't do anything (like canyon runs on passes with a lot of 2nd gear hair pins and curves) with it.. until you get the synchro fixed.
Good luck.

Re: can't downshift to 2nd...is my tranny busted? (The HamsterBall)
It could be numerous things. It could be something like a warped pressure plate, to bent shift fork. fixing trannies sucks!!!
try bleeding the system, check bushings and shiftlinkage.. If not, then if you can't live with it, I would suggest taking the tranny off and checking out the clutch, Trow out bearing.

i guess you'll need to get that tranny off the car, pop the case off and take a look at the second gear synchro. let us know, if you find the cause of your problem!
