Default can a valve fall in a cylinder?

a friend of mine has a b17 in his 94 hatch and there use to be this kinda knocking sound in his head above the number 4 cylinder, I told him about it, well a few days after I told him about it he called me and said it got worse,

I had him look under his hood, he said that his plug wire cover had a hole blown out of it, so he took that off and the top off his number 4 plug wire had exploded into pieces, he took it off and took out the spark plug, he told me the gap was gone, i told him thats why the wire exploded, it shorted out, but why did it lose its gap and get smashed together, I think that sound was a loose retainer and now the retainer came off and the valve fell in the cylinder and smashed against the spark plug.

what do you guys think?

Well I guess he wont be too bad off considering he was gunna put his turbo on this week, i guess he can just get his **** built up now.
