can i rev a sohc to 8000?
stock bottom end and i just put on a crower stage 2 race cam with springs and retainers. and simple bolt ons.......my question is can i rev the motor past 7200 or whatever the stock cut off is because i just run out of rpms way too fast and feel like i should rev it a lil higher but don't want to damage anything.
and its a d16y8. 98 ex coupe.
and yes i searched and didn't find anything informative.

yes you can. With that cam and valvetrain you should be fine and making power up there to. You will need a chipped ecu so you can rev higher than the fuel cutoff though.

why do you say this? He already stated he has an upgraded valvetrain. He will be perfectly fine revving that high.

*EDIT READ THAT YOU HAD VALVETRAIN*
You are 8,000 RPM ready. Make sure you dont go too much higher because at that point your rod bolts or bearings would probably start to fail.

yeah, you could if you had the right fuel map setup for that rpm range.
but....why would you want to? you would be waaaaaaaaay outside of the power range. the engine would be making no peak power past like 7k rpm's

yes, as a result of not upgrading the valvetrain.
ricers just buy fake chips on ebay, put em in, and think they can rev to 9K like everyday.

did he he upgrade the valve train just like this guy did?if not then thats why his car is in the shop right now as we speak

1. 9,000 RPM is not 8,000 RPM is it.
2. The thread started stated he had a valvetrain upgrade. At high RPM stress is put on the valvetrain and thats why motors fail. Past 8,000 RPM stress is then put on the bottom end, especially on the rod bolts and rod bearings. If you have a full valvetrain upgrade, ARP rod bolts and ACL bearings, then 9000 RPM shouldn't be a problem.
3. You can't fry a piston.

read the post!!!! he has a crower stage 2 cam. This cam makes power up there around 8k rpms.

or quotes it daily...
with proper ecu "tinkering" (raised rev limit...) 8000 should be cool. i just personally wouldnt do it all that often, but thats because im a little chickenshit when it comes to that stuff, cause i dont have money to rebuilt if i **** it up.
chip that ecu- go dyno up to 8 grand and let us know . that cam should make nice power up there

Re: can i rev a sohc to 8000? (2slo2ugly)
friend of mine has a d16y8 with a stage 2 crower can and ti-valvesprings and retainers......we found that he could go up to 7800 rpms and make good power......and im sure 8000 rpms wouldnt do anything, just make sure the bottom end is built well enough or else u will have big problems....

Talk to either "Preacherboy" or "Built2Spill" on this board. They have both owned the same SOHC that will rev to 8k safetly.

Re: can i rev a sohc to 8000? (Ricey McRicerton)
I have mine set to 8500 rpm. I don't drive at that all day but when at the autox the extra revs can really come in handy. Could mean the difference between having to upshift or not. Saves lots of time in the overall.

thats funny u say take the redline out all together... like a year ago my friend had a 93 bubble dx and he had a swap all ready he wanted to blow the dx up so he had a ecu wit no redline some cheap **** and he had a autometer 10rpm tach on the dash and we drove around he hit 8500 alot on the stock motor (dont think it was going fast tho) and he reved it past 10k one time and the motor went BOOM and acloud of white smoke behind us LOL... then we called his brother to tow it home... it was fun, and kinda pointless.. but they can rev to 10k... LOL dont expect power or it lasting long tho LMAO

The r/s ratio causes alot of force on the side walls and piston speed will crazy at that rpm. Not to mention you ned a very aggressive cam, and a race head to breath and make usable power up there. Just for example, ZEX man keep a pretty much stock redline with his SOHC because it doesn't make alot past 7200rpm, and he make about 500whp and run 10's.
