Can i install a 1999 civic EX speedometer on my DX?
I have a 1999 HB DX which doesnt have the RPM gauge on it, but the EX model for the same year does. My friend's dad run a junkyard with lots of civics and it wouldnt be hard for me to get my hand on a 1999 EX speedometer. So my question is does a EX speedometer fit on my DX, and how hard would the job be? is it a simple replace and correct wiring or do i have to get it to a professional bodyshop? Is it too hard and costly that i should just buy a universal tachometer and install that instead?
Thank you in advance for any help you can provide

Plug and play. All you need is a Philip screwdriver. Remove the top two screws holding in the bezel. Then the four screws holding in the cluster. Unplug it.
NOW, if you want to retain your mileage...
Remove the cluster bezels from the front of the clusters by pressing in the black clips along the edge of the bezels. Take a Philip screwdriver and remove the four screws directly behind the speedometer gauge (in the rear of course). This will release the speedometer from the cluster housing. Swap your speedometer into the cluster with the tachometer. Reassemble everything and place back the new cluster.

Re: Can i install a 1999 civic EX speedometer on my DX? (BlueIntegraBoy)
wow, you guys got back to me so fast. thanks alot, so it is very simple. i'm really just starting to learn about these thing so I still dont understand, will the rpm gauge work correctly? i mean if the DX cluster doesnt have a rpm gauge....where would the wiring go? Do i have to add more wiring because there an extra option on the cluster?

Yep, it will absolutely work right. I've been using an EX cluster in a DX for years now.

Yup, it plugs right in, no modifying required. The the most work you'll ever have to do is get the old one out, which is a matter of 6 bolts in all

Can I install any EX cluster in my 1997 Civic ?
This is something I like to do too. I have a Canadian 1997 Civic LX sedan which does not have the tachometer, but has ABS. Can I use any EX cluster from the 1996 to 2000 (same model) which has a tachometer and ABS check light or it has to be a 1997 EX cluster of the same year as mine ?
As I understand from all the suggestions/advices from you guys, all the required wirings are behind the 1997 LX cluster without tachometer, ready to be connectedto the tachometer on the EX cluster. There is no new wiring for me to run through the firewall to the engine, am I correct ? (I am not very handy, especially when something as complicated as an engine.)
Thanks in advance for your inputs.

Re: Can i install a 1999 civic EX speedometer on my DX? (BlueIntegraBoy)
Yup, just as BlueIntegraBoy says. It's that easy.
Integra cluster can also be used with a little more work. I installed it on a 93 and it worked. I was going to install teg cluster on my 98, but the gap was too annoying to look at...

Re: I installed a cluster with tachometer into my 1997 Civic
I just installed a 2000 Civic Si cluster with tachometer into my Canadian 1997 Civic LX. I followed BlueIntegraBoy clear instructions to swap my old speedometer into the tachometer-cluster. I also brought over the ABS light-circuit board as the cluster with tachometer does not have one (fuel gauge needs to be removed to get the ABS light-circuit board out/in). Everything went smoothly. Many thanks to all of you guys for your constructive inputs that helped me a lot in tacking this job.

Take it back out and make sure none of the wiring connections are loose or exposed.

Re: Can i install a 1999 civic EX speedometer on my DX? (huumanshadow)
I also have a 1996 civic Dx. From what i am reading...the gauge that shows RPM will show correctly if I swap in a 1999 si cluster...however... how does this work, why would they make necessary wiring in the civic dx to show rpm ...if the cluster for the 1996 dx doesnt have an rpm gauge...im so confused...
Also my speedometer also dies out sometimes, and when I click the reset distance travel button it works again, this is on my stock cluster...what could be the problem.

Re: Can i install a 1999 civic EX speedometer on my DX? (spaceman00)
Honda figured it would be easier/more cost effective to use all the same cluster wiring for all their differen't models from 92-00.
Thus why you're wiring is there.

You might have the same problem, check the connections. Sometimes those plugs don't connect all the way. Maybe some bad wiring is crossed and jumping wires.
