Default can a filter be to dirty to clean?

I hope I put this into the right area but my aem filter is dirty as hell and i guess my question is as stated above. It has paint dust on it from when the car had been repainted. Im wondering if anybody had incountered this. and if the paint dust will come out with the cleaning kit. I didnt notice how dirty it really was till tonight i was going to move it up for a trip that had heavy rain in the way. so yeah anyone know if the paint dust will pose a problem???? its kind of a lame question i know...
