can faulty vss cause lack of power?

Have a 96 ex civic with a lsvtec, type r tranny, latley my speed sensor has been acting crazy, car is also loosing power, anyway the vss can cause that?

I was told that it can cause it to mess up because of the ecu thinking its in a different gear
