Default Can anyone explain this wierd belt wear?

So today I go to the drive-thru at the bank to cash a check and I'm sittin there waitin for my money to be sent back... all the sudden my car stalls. I try startin it back up and it just keeps turning over. My dad comes and tows me home and we pop the hood to check things out and the timing belt broke. We just put a new timing belt in about 3-4,000 miles ago, but it had been rubbing up against something and wearing itself away.

But, what neither of us get is that one part of the belt wore real thin while the other didnt.... that doesnt make any sense to me. We checked everything the belt runs on--theres no wiggles or wobbles to any of them.

Can anyone explain it?

THE BELT IS 11/16 INCHES ON ONE PART, THEN 14/16 INCHES ON ANOTHER....

This is a 93 civic dx BTW

Now I cant wait to see how many valves are damaged! yippee!

You may not have valve damage. This happened to my 1988 dx when I was at idle and no motor damage at all. Check your pulley it may not be sitting right

you sure the belt guide was reinstalled and in the proper way, the curve should go towards the block on the inner guide and towards the pulley on the outer guide.

Sounds like something is sitting a little crooked. check to make sure every thing the belt touches is straight.

johnny_tdi --- as the engine turns over, aren't the pistons smackin against the valves? because of the way the engine is made (i forget the word that its called lol) the valves wont move w/o the belt, only the pistons will

Ill check the belt guide and other stuff tomoro... hopefully i can figure this out

Your timing belt guide/keeper was installed improperly as stated above.

Correct. All I am saying is my engine died while I was stoppoed at a red light took it to honda they fixed it by replacing the broken timming belt. No valve damage was caused. I asked the mechanic there and he said that in some cases when the engine is at lower rpm's like idle it may not damage the head of the motor. That is my point.

the valves will still slam on the piston even at idle. talk about the cams will still pushing the rocker arms and valves are pushed down..

Im no expert, but all my 16 valves bent last m onth due to t-belt snap. and i have to replace all of them plus pistons

the belt wear may be explained if you did not have both washers on the crank pulley... you probably do, just a thought....
