Camshaft noise?
Hey, I just got my camshaft replaced with a ZEX/comp cams camshaft (part #59100). It makes alot of noise. It doesn't seem like an unhealthy, bad noise though. I already had it timed and everything so i thought it wouldn't be a problem. I was just wondering if camshafts make alot of noise when you upgrade them or if i have bigger problems?
By the way, my engine is a D16z6.

did you properly lube it with the assembly grease or whatever they come with? I've heard alot of the zex cams make your engine sound like a desiel...

From what I heard you need to readjust the vavle lash twice (one right after the intall, and second one after the break in).

how old is your valvetrain, mostly springs and retainers?
and did they recomend a stiffer spring with the cam?
recently had a similar problem with a stage 2 cam that someone installed on stock valve train. loud clicking from sticking valve springs, and began to warp stock retainers and were nearly permanatly attached to the keepers.
new correct valve springs and retainers, relap valves and its tight and strong.

So do you think if i get stiffer springs and some new retainers, it will quiet it down? And if so, how much will those cost?

you shouldn't need new springs or retainers. zex cams have an aggressive ramp rate and will make more noise. Only solution that I've heard was to LOOSEN the valve lash but don't know that you really want to do that.

Your best bet is to contact Zex, and ask them what they recommend (valvesprings, valve lash, etc.) for the cam that you're running.

I guess you get what you pay for. The ZEX camshaft was only $250 shipped and what i got was a noisy car. Should have spent an extra $150 and got some crower cams or Skunk2 cams. they probably would have been better. But whats done is done, and i don't wanna spend anymore money on another camshaft.

that noise is normal man....a buddy of mine spent $2500 for a JUN b16a2 head, and it's FAWKING loud....you just gotta live with it man....we did a valves like 15 times now...it's gotten a little quieter, but still noticeable....but the power gained is AWESOME!!!
