camshaft help PLEASE!
ok so i bought type r cams for my b16 ek. wen putting them in i think i ****ed up big time! i read online that the specs were 20ft lbs for the 12 mm bolts and 8foot lbs for the 10 mm bolts. well doing so 5 bolts broke so like an idiot i tried starting it but it made a wierd noise so i turned key quick. the noise may have been my exhaust due to having open headers but im not sure. could there be any major damage?? what should i try to do?

Re: camshaft help PLEASE!
was the timing dead on? take that cam holder out and get that broen bolt out of the head unless ur gunna have to take it to the machine shop. you could have damaged the cam but i doubt it unless the timnig was off. the cam journals use oil to glide the cam on so unless the holder was cocked ur good. i'd say take the holder off and get a new stud in there asap and tourque them right!

Re: camshaft help PLEASE!
IDK if you know how to time a motor but that coild be another issue all in its own. Motor must be at TDC (if you dont know how to get to TDC ill help you out) and then you have to apply pressure on the cams to get them at exactly 12 o'clock and they line up so! let us know man

Re: camshaft help PLEASE!
were the lines on the cams exactly across from each other. if u look at the back timing cover right behind the cams there is a little line in the plastic. the cam lines have to match up with that when u put the belt on otherwise the timing will be off!

Re: camshaft help PLEASE!
and did u have the bottom timing cover off along with the crank puley so u can check the bottom end ? or are u just messin with the cams?

Re: camshaft help PLEASE!
i was just messing with the cams....but i did trun the crank pully so that itw was strait. And now wile i was goin to take the vams off i noticed that the up arrows on the cam gears are facing each other should i turn the crank so that they are strait up, or leave em as is and just put them back in that way?

Re: camshaft help PLEASE!
now i think my problem became an even bigger problem cuz i noticed that wen i turned the crank to put the motor at 12 o'clock one arrow will be up and the other down

Re: camshaft help PLEASE!
wow dude you need to get a haynes manual. You dont know how to time a motor. thats problem number one right there. problem number two is that u rushed into getting th car running again. Take the crankshaft pulley off. Take the timing covers off. On the oil pumo gear (that the timing belt sits on)... the crankshaft.. there will be a mark.. line the mark up with the arrow on the oil pump. THEN take the spark plug out of cylinder one. -- closest to timnig belt. Out long screw driver in. rotate crank 360 and there will be a point you get to top dead center. the cam arrows should both be pointing up .. Take the belt off.. put a 12mm wrench on the cams and rotate them to where they are up ... use pressure when applying the belt again ./. exhaust side first, intake side second. Get a manual man .. dont blow that B16.. otherwise ill send u a timed single cam and u can give me the B16

Re: camshaft help PLEASE!
Just a side note, the torque specs for the cams holders, are in inch pounds, not foot pounds. That's why the bolts broke... You need to get an inch pounds torque wrench when you go to put it back together. Kevin
