Cam markings in JDM B16A

Default Cam markings in JDM B16A

A friend of mine is after buying and fitting a JDM B16a (1999 motor) into his 96 EK VTi (uk spec SiR) anyway the motor is sweet and seems to have very low mileage on it. He had an EK9 valve cover on his original engine and swapped it over to the new motor, when we were putting the valve cover on i noticed what looks like a squigley '3' on both intake and exhaust cams. I couldnt see the ends without taking the cams out. Its either a '3' or an 'M' its hard to tell, or it may even possibly be a kanji letter, were not sure. After everything was double checked, we took the car out (it fired up on the first turn of the key!!!) it was super smooth, with a few puffs of black smoke on start up but soon settled down to a nice quiet idle (approx 750rpm) we let it sit for a while to get up to heat and took it out for a drive. Drove perfectly. then my friend decided to give it some....OMFG....it pulled wicked hard from approx 3000rpm right up to the redline in 2nd 3rd and 4th gear and was still pulling hard in 5th right up to approx 125mph where he let off it again. I know the JDM b16A engines have 170ps (168bhp) but thats on 100ron fuel and a JDM p30 ecu, we were using 95 gas and the stock UKDM P30 and this thing pulled like no VTi i was ever in before (i used to own a 98 VTi and it was dead compared to this thing) everything looks pretty stock and the cam gears are OE items, so we were supposing the cams may be aftermarket. Does anyone recognise the marks i mentioned.....could they be higher spec cams?????
