cam install- timing is all out of whack???
re-installed my cam today and it didnt go so well. i got cyl#1 @tdc, lubed and installed camshaft/gear, installed rocker arm assembly following correct specs and tighening sequence, loosened t-belt tensioner and put on the timing belt, tightened the tensioner again, installed distributer but i think it was 180 off(i figured if it was my car woulndt start and id just switch it around), set valve lash by manually turning over the engine 2 full sequences(1-3-4-2) then tightened the adjusting nuts to 14ft/lbs. at this point crank pulley and camgear are still at tdc in coordination with each other, so it seemed good to me. i put on the valvecover and reconnected variouse sensors and hoses. time came to fire it up. i let it crank 2x then it felt like a thud or a snag or something weird. i immediately stopped and went under the hood- crank pully was tdc for #1, but cam gear was showing #4 tdc(up was in the 6oclock position). at this point i stopped working on it. what could have caused the timing to become off again w/o even starting it??? it was all lined up when i first cranked it- did i miss something. sorry for the long post, but i feel that i needed to be descriptive to get a more specific answer.

dont forget.. your crank turns 2 times then your cam turns once.
so being at number 4 when the crank indicates tdc is normal

true- i wasnt really thinking properly by the time i started my car- im wondering if i should go try to crank it again. i just dont wanna bend any valves if the timing is off and i got worried cause i felt a lil thump while turning it over.

yea the cam and crank line up- i guess the 2 questions i have are 1- when #1 is @tdc, the rotor in the dizzy is pointing just a little bit past where #1 cyl is on the cap. is that right?
2- the timing belt tension. i have about 1/4 inch play in the belt on the exhaust side, and mabye half inch play in the belt on the intake side. does this sound too tight? i dont want it to be too tight and break when i gas it. also, the tensioner adjustment bolt, i cant get my torquewrench down in there, so i used a regular wratchet and a breaker bar to hit it so it would tighten , regardless, i dont think its up to the 33 or 37ft/lbs that it needs to be. how bad is it?

when 1 cylinder at tdc your rotor should also point at 1.
did you turn you crank counterclock wise? this will help your tension tighten up by itself. don't overtighten the tension though.

To overcome this problem, The best thing to do is to set the cam to TDC by lining up the two guide holes. There's a small hole in each cam that when turned to TDC will line up with a hole in the oil supply rail (long flat alum piece that bolts over the cam caps). You can use a small allen head to hold it in place. Once you have it lined up that way, you can look and see what STR is using for TDC on the cam gear.
