Calling D-series tranny experts!! HELP NEEDED!!!
Ok, here's my little situation.
I've bought a tranny from a guy for my 98 EX. I want to know if there is any physical way of telling the difference between say an EX tranny (S40) i believe, and a dx or cx tranny.
The Identification and VIn numbers are not still on the tranny. He says it is off a 98 EX.
Please don't bitch to me about how the tranny is probably stolen, hot, etc. I really don't care. It was local and allowed me to get some transportation as quickly as possible.
So if you know any way i can check for sure that it is an ex before putting it in the car, please let me know. THanks

pull the internals and count the teeth
search under username mistabone or something to that. he did a full write up to d-series trannies.
also, you know after you put it in the car that you will be able to tell the difference between a ex and cx tranny

No other way without the identification information off the trans. If you decide to put the the trans on here is the site:

#1 For the EX the diff carrier bearing ID is 40mm. You can measure it fairly easily if you pop out the axle seals.
#2 Remove the oil fill plug. Mark one tooth on the ring gear with a permanent marker. Rotate the input shaft and count the teeth on the ring gear. If you have 68 teeth, it should be the 4.25 FD of the EX trans.
#3 There is a circular stamp by the oil filler hole. A000 is the small bearing DX/LX/HX/CX case. B000 is the large bearing EX case.
