Calipers do not fit on with new pads and rotor
The title says it, I can not get the caliper into position. 98 Civic EX sedan
Rebuilt calipers, new rotors and pads. From Advance Auto.
The rotors do mic. out a bit thicker but the same thing actually happened when I bought the outgoing rotors a couple of years ago. Back then I checked out other types of pads but they were all too thick so I got around the problem running one older pad with a new one on each side for about 9 months, then I swapped in the other mismatched pairs for another season, by then I had worn down the "new" ones enough to fit in together.
Has anyone had this happen? Solution? Cut the new rotors. That will cost almost what I paid for the new ones,LOL.
Also, I got Wearever Silver pads. The set does not have any wear tabs. All 4 pads are the same. Can that be right?

Re: Calipers do not fit on with new pads and rotor
im guessing u got cheap-e pads and cheap-e rotors.. could always just grind/file down the pads a bit. thats if the caliper piston is pushed in all the way and it still doesn't fit.

wait a minute, when is sanding new brake pads/rotors ever a good idea? either the brake caliper wasnt compressed far enough with a c-clamp, or you have the wrong pads.

Re: Calipers do not fit on with new pads and rotor
The pistons are all the way in on these rebuilt calipers. That would be the first answer but it is not the problem. The casting is not wide enough to take the pads and rotor! But the same thing happened a few years ago when the original rotor went bad and I got 2 bendix replacements plus pads to replace the original Honda pads and the car still had original calipers. That is when I mismatched new with old as mentioned above. That time I compared different types of pads. I even took back Wagners to another place because I though they were the problem but every brand had too much stock on it.
This time they are Wearever rotors and pads.
This is the 2nd time in 3 years that I have had this problem. Somebody must have run into this before.
Has anybody seen a set of pads come without warning tabs on the inboard pad?

i have the same problem. and before any1 tells me to push the piston back, ITS NOT THE SIDE OF THE PISTON!!
i repeat, ITS NOT THE PISTON SIDE!!!!
for me, its the side that faces the outside. the outer side.

did you check your part numbers to be positive that they didn't give you the wrong parts? happens ALL the time

Yes on correct pad and rotor #s, I have the boxes. Cant be sure on the calipers as the cores went to Advance in them. The calipers fit the brackets fine and the old and new hardware match up. I wonder if the calipers are narrower for DX, LX, etc. for some reason but they are entirely different part #s anyway, and not what I have in hand. Like I said, last time this happened the Wagner pads were just as beefy, I had gotten them at a regional chain.
I guess you need to buy "REAL" Honda parts and go broke to eliminate problems. Then again, the dealer hands out Prestolite wires and Tec dist. caps to replace my Honda stuff. Tec was aftermarket when I bought it from the old Motomart, it is OEM at the dealer now.

Just last week they also gave me a bad alternator right out of the box, checked it out with the service manual and it was a bad voltage regulator after I installed the whole thing. Waste of time and then they look at you like your a moron, second new alternator fixed the car. What if I had to pay a mechanic twice for that ****? your beat, money out of your pocket.

Yeah they ****ed my stepmom on an alternator once...it literally almost lit the car on fire. The plastic ring around stud for the cable was missing...mechanic cranked it down and the car almost caught on fire on the way home. Another time I bought an alt there for my eg and the pulley was too small so it squeaked constantly. I returned that **** and they gave me cash+refunded my credit card. I made $186 on that deal LOL
I went in there for 97 civic ex front rotors and was given dx rotors....twice.
They gave me the wrong hub bearing once, considering almost all 88-00 and 90-01 civics/integras use the same bearing that took talent.
I asked for 98 gsr axles for a b series swap in my eg...they kept giving me da axles and d series axles. I gave up and went to NAPA after 3 days of aggrivation. I asked for 99-00 si axles and was given the correct **** on the first try. Advance has different part numbers for ls/gs/rs, gsr, si and del sol vtec axles. wtf lol

Dx or Lx brake pads, they wont even fit in the caliper. and the pads i got
are too beefy as well. still gotta go return them

Re: Calipers do not fit on with new pads and rotor
I also didnt have an issue...once i made a third trip and was guaranteed the correct parts.
OP just go back there and tell them the **** doesnt fit and you want your money back...then go to another store. If that doesnt work then take the caliper back and hit the salesman in the head with it

Re: Calipers do not fit on with new pads and rotor
i had this issue when i upgraded my calipers.. i had to take the clips of and grind down the tab on the back of the pad. no problems after that. but you prob got a dx/lx mix up is my guess

Re: Calipers do not fit on with new pads and rotor
some times the caliper doesn't slide enough in the axles, in other words the bolts that attach the caliper to the arm are seized and wont let the caliper slide as far as it is supossed, then you encounter the problem of the pads being too thick. probably the axles of the new calipers are not seized pob the wrong size...

Re: Calipers do not fit on with new pads and rotor
ok. i figured it out. when you remove the caliper, there will be 2 12mm bolts ON the caliper itself. losen those 2 bolts and the outer side of the caliper will slide out a bit more. which will make the brake pad fit perfectly. i did it and it slipped right in
