CA BAR legal cat question
So obtaining a GSR cat is getting to be impossible and also very expensive. I need to bar my car after I get the GSR running. I was wondering if anyone has tried the Magnaflow Catalytic converter and gotten passed by BAR. Does anyone else have any experience with this or suggestions, thanks.

Re: CA BAR legal cat question
One last question for you guys, I have a CTR cluster in my car, do they check the miles? If they do, I need to revert back to the stock, but let me know, thanks.

damn thats crazy.. here in florida we dont have a bar test or anything like that. so we can put all types of stuff and not worry about the law on modified cars. only thing is they will a law for car height and loudness... it depends on the cop but most city cops dont write tickets in florida for noise or improper safety because of height.

Um, when I got my swap BAR'd, they not only checked the cat, they looked up the EO number to be sure it matched the engine. If you go slapping on any old cat on there, you may be disappointed when you go for your BAR. Caveat emptor.

You might find this story useful.
LoL! I exploded the cat on my B16A2 Si motor last week.
I was cruising down the freeway @ 4,000 RPM and puked a distributor. OMG! It looked like the 4th of July behind me! I thought I had an electrical fire -- but as it turned out, when the dissy went, it loaded the exhaust system with gas, and one or two backfires later -- the cat guts went flying out the tailpipe...
I didn't discover the cat was blown out until I got the motor running again. The exhaust smelled dank, and after 40 miles of freeway driving, I got a CEL. The local Honda dealer put it on their diag machine, and it came back with a bad cat code. Forward and rear 02 sensors checked out okay.
Aha! That's when the flames coming out the ***-end of my ride started making sense...
Gulp! Honda wanted $670 to replace the cat. Hello?!?!?
I decided to look around online for a performance cat. Insight #2 is...
Basically, there are 2 different kinds of cats -- 49 state legal -- and C.A.R.B. legal.
If you live in (or travel to) Cali, you'll need a C.A.R.B. legal cat. The difference in price is shocking. I bought a 49 state legal MagnaFlow 22630 (with OEM flanges, e.g. bolt-on) on Amazon.com for $193 w/FS. The same style cat with a C.A.R.B. sticker is $520.
I *think* the reason the OEM cat is so expensive is because it's *probably* C.A.R.B. certified.
I stuck the new Magnaflow cat on yesterday. I'm gonna take it back to the Honda dealer tomorrow to clear the code, because I'm running a stock (radio) head and don't know the security code. If I kill the battery connection or pull the radio (backup) fuse, I'm afraid I'll lose my tunes.
The Magnaflow is a quality item! Great construction, heavy flanges, integrated heat shield -- sounds great -- smells great. The reason it was $193 is because Si motors use special cats. The 02 bung is positioned in the middle of the cat (measures the first half of the cat only). MagnaFlow cats (with flanges and downstream 02 bung) for regular Hondas are around $150 on Amazon.com, if I remember correctly.
Anyway, that's my 2-cents. Have fun...

BTW, I'm super happy with the MagnaFlow. Highly recommended!
