Look to see if there is oil leaking from anywhere like valvecover, oil pan, headgasket etc..Ask the person you are buying it from if they have done a compression or leakdown test. Those will pretty much tell the condition of the rings/ if the valves are seating properly. Also look to make sure the timing belt isnt broken. I would deffinately do a bill of sale so if you are not satisfied(motor burning oil or blown)then u can get ur money back.

no way to really tell the condition of the motor..i dont think your going to have him rip arpart the motor to check the rings and such...i have the person take the valve cover off to check it out...any burnt oil, sludge on the valve cover, bent valves, leakage, just stuff thats in plain view, other than that, the seller could bull **** u all day about the inside of the motor. If your buying from a shop, ask for a reciept, and private...ask for a copy of drivers license...incase he tries to **** u over.

Bring a 10mm wrench and take the valve cover off. If its milky, looks like a bbq grill, or some other food products the engine probably has not been well taken care of.
You will also have the chance to look at the timing belt. Is it in good shape? Also you could see if the timing marks line up. But that requires a couple more tools and you will have to remove the spark plugs to turn the crank over.
