buying a car wit "speedometer" problems. Should i do it? EZ fix?
1998 civic hatch
120,xxx
clean title
black/black
everything seems good, but he said the speedometer needle sometimes works, sometimes tells the inaccurate readings, and sometimes just stays at 0mph.
planning on going out there with my dx cluster and swapping it out to see if it may be his cluster, but if not, what else could it be?
i searched and found out about vss and speed sensor, can anyone locate that for me? is there anything else i should be looking for?
he was askin $4500, but i haggled him down to $3500.
let me know guys, thanks.

the VSS (vehicle speed sensor) is located on the passenger side of the car on top of the transmission. Its about a 10 minute fix and it cost me $40

Buying a car with a broken speedometer is not good. 9 times out of 10 the miles are wrong, and who knows the speedometer could of been broken for years and the car could have a lot more than 120k. But if you are getting it for a good price then go for it. Another common problem is the plug itself going bad that connects to the vss (vehicle speed sensor), so try that first its cheaper.

lol yeah but its a civic, we switch motors and shells more than our underwear!
OP- vss is either bad, the plug is bad, the fuse is blown, or the clusters bad
either way an ek hatch black on black for less that 4 grand... hell yeah!

USDM Civics didn't have black interiors. For '98-'00 Civic hatches in the US all had TYPE K (Dark Gray) interiors. This is often mistaken for black on hatches and the Si coupe for some reason. They are both Dark Gray interiors.
Oh, and if the replacement cluster didn't fix it, I'd be hesitant to buy it. Especially since you're in an area with a relatively high concentration of these cars.

Yep. That's exactly what I meant. He should have no problem finding a car for sale in his area.
For more information on the options, look at this link. I just noticed I didn't list what years of the hatch had what interior colors, but here's my chart on that too.
