buy new air filter or not - cheapie filter in now, want K&N (worth the $40?)
I checked out the cheapo one that is currently installed, and I can definitely see the light from a weak flashlight from behind it so I don't think its too bad, however I am looking to increase my MPG, currently getting between 30-32 city/HW mixed.
Read nothing but great things about K&N's and how they last a lifetime if you clean and oil them once in a while.
Worth the investment or will the increase in MPG be minimal on a 00 ex?
Thanks

yes. worth simply becuz you can clean n reuse. in a years time its paid for itsself. minimal hp gains also. breath better feel better.. so mpg should stay the same if not increase slightly.

i had a k/n filter on my EJ8 and i didn't notice much of a difference in power/mpg.
have you tried taking out your stock resonator? it really frees up some air and you'll notice slightly better throttle response. I'm sure you'll gain 1-2 mpg's if anything. At the moment i have a integra stock iair intake on my EJ8, seems to flow alot better than the stock 96-00 civic air intake. Im in CA, carb laws suck

I don't understand how removing the resonator would do anything, could you please explain how it would free up air by removing it?
isn't it just a hollow plastic box not connecting to the airflow?

the resonator runs from your engine bay into the front side lower passenger panel to your stock air box. Im not sure how to really explain it to you but the resonator does in fact restrict air flow. Trust me it helps suck in a more air. Also, the 96-00 civic air box's seems to restrict air as well. Alot of the air sucking into the air box builds up in the air box. If you take it apart you'll see what i mean. The integra (94-01) stock air box on the other hand is a straight through design which gets the most of a air intake. The integra air box comes with the cone filter as well(i have a k/n cone filter on my setup), they way i look at it i have a diy comptech CAI. Throttle response is def. better than my civic stock air intake w/ k/n filter. As for mpg, no change, im still getting around 35mpg.
