Default Burns oil and now coolant?

My son's 99 civic Si (d16y8?) has been using oil since he has owned it (a few months) He has to add a quart every 600 miles. A week ago it started running hot so we added coolant to the rad (the overflow reservoir was over full). Now we need to add coolant daily to the rad while the reservoir stays full. No visible leaks. I pulled the plugs and they look pretty normal. White/tan residue on the electrode/insulator and ground strap. When the coolant is full the engine runs cool/very cold with the heater on full. It's about -5* C outside. 180 000 kms.

Maybe for the coolant yes but does the head gasket cause oil to be burned? I don't want to do the head gasket unless it fixes both. If it won't fix both I may as well find a motor to swap...

you probably have other issues on top of the head gasket causing the oil loss. do compression and leakdown tests.

check for oil leaks or possible valve stem seals but its also why pull the head without doing a valve job ya know. depends on what you want to do though. if you can find a swap for cheap

Any advice on what to look for in a swap? Most of the motors I have seen are sitting on some guys garage floor. Tips on how to tell if it's any good?

thats a good question the problem I see with already pulled motors it was pulled for a reason or it would still be in the car

and you cant tell unless you start if its blown already

Point of fact for all engine fluids; if you're not leaking it then you're burning it. Headgasket is probably done and the rings are more than likely shot.

As far as swaps, get them from a reputable company. HMO springs to mind.

If the coolant reservoir is overfull and the radiator is low, you have a blown headgasket. Compression gasses are leaking past the headgasket, over pressurizing your cooling system and forcing the coolant into the reservoir. Because compression gasses are leaking out and coolant is not leaking in, your spark plugs, oil and exhaust will appear normal. The problem is that your coolant will continually get low leading to overheating. Repeated overheating will warp/melt metal parts, ruin the temper of metal parts and possibly seize the engine leading to catastrophic failure. Fix the headgasket immediately or find a new motor. Sorry about that.
In my opinion the Y8 is a good motor.

If your looking for a engine look for these thing
Check dip stick for oil if u see oil mixture with antifreeze there a bad head gasket (milkshake)
Remove spark plug & check all 4 cyl
Rotate crank to make shore it rotate if rotate easy there a snap timing belt
Make shore the block wasn't outside
Ask why the engine was remove for
Junk yard will give u a 90 day warranty if u go that rout

Rotate crank to make shore it rotate if rotate easy there a snap timing belt Doesn't serve as an indicator for anything except that you can rotate the crank.
Make shore the block wasn't outside How do you do that?
Ask why the engine was remove for They could tell you anything.

if you are going to look for a new d16y8 make sure you check the bearings. they tend to spin allot and get pulled instead of rebuilding. i check by putting a little oil in the cylinders and roatating the crankshaft while pressing down on one piston at a time if it gives at all at TDC or the bottom of the rotation there is room between the rod bearing and crankshaft so was spun.

unless i'm planning on doing a full tear down/rebuild i will never buy an engine that is already removed from a running car again. if i can't hear it run/or drive the seller could say anything to get my cash. keep that in mind.

In which case you might as well rebuild the existing because you know its just the headgasket plus the 180,000 you may as well rebuild because if you're going to do the headgasket, just do it all and get the block decked while it's torn down so you don't have recurring headgasket problems.

The tricky part is finding a reputable machine shop.
