Default burning antifreeze smell

99 honda civic dx automatic. sometimes when i drive it hard (like when I'm running late for work and driving more aggressively) i occasionally get the smell of burning antifreeze through the vent (and when i park i can also smell it coming from under the hood). my mechanic just checked all connections, the radiator, and the heating core (no ac compressor currently), and gave it a little spin- everything was normal. anyone encounter this before?

I had a bad radiator cap that made my overflow tank spill coolant and could smell it coming from my vents and in the engine bay. the smell went away on its own after a while

are you checking your coolant levels everyday? do you have to keep adding?

Buy/borrow/rent a block tester. It's extremely cheap. Use it.

How long have you owned it? If, purchased recently and there was a leak, head gasket repair or water-pump replacement it's not unusual to have a coolant smell during operating temps for several weeks afterwards.

Mine did after head gasket replacement. Have you ever had 50/50 coolant on your hands? It's fairly viscous right? Imagine that on areas of engine that are warm/hot but not hot enough to evaporate it quickly.

Reply 11: "i replaced my radiator about a month ago, and from all of the antifreeze that spilled all over, to this day i still have that smell"

No, I've never left coolant on my hands, because I'm not an idiot. That **** is caustic. You get it on your skin, you wash it off. You get it on your shirt, you get ready to turn that shirt into rags. This is "how to wrench 101" type ****, man. You don't just leave fluids on your skin. If you're spilling enough that the smell lasts a MONTH, you need to go spend the $.50 on a freaking funnel. That's sloppy as hell work. That's the kind of **** I'd expect from W95, not an actual, self-respecting DIYer.

Now I know why you are so uptight and ****. You are a "literal" dick: as you interpret things too literally. I didn't mean that I left coolant on my hands for long periods and I know goddamn good and well it's caustic. If it can kill pets it surely can't be good for much else than in an engine's cooling system. What mechanic (and some you are not even worthy of wiping the sweat off their ball-sacks) hasn't at some point in time for brief moments had some coolant on their hands or arms from pulling hoses, head gasket work, flushing?

I'm thinking NARC is short form for narcissist because foir some reason you can't accept or phathom that you might be wrong once in a while.

DSM-5 criteria for narcissistic personality disorder include these features:

*Having an exaggerated sense of self-importance
*Expecting to be recognized as superior even without achievements that warrant it
*Exaggerating your achievements and talents
*Being preoccupied with fantasies about success, power, brilliance, beauty or the perfect mate
*Believing that you are superior and can only be understood by or associate with equally special people
*Requiring constant admiration
*Having a sense of entitlement
*Expecting special favors and unquestioning compliance with your expectations
*Taking advantage of others to get what you want
*Having an inability or unwillingness to recognize the needs and feelings of others
*Being envious of others and believing others envy you
*Behaving in an arrogant or haughty manner
