building a quick sohc vtec in a EG
current setup:
JDM SOHC VTEC D15B (128hp factory claimed)
JDM VTi S20 tranny (same ratios/FD as D16Z6) LSD Torsen equipped
P08 ECU 5.0k vtec, 7.6k revlimit
4-2-1 JDM oem header
RSR 60m straight through exhuast
Drop in filter
next on the list B-series TB, and Skunk2 cam gear, lightspeed 4-2-1 1pc header, reprogrammed ecu and lightened flywheel to about 12lbs...
not sure whats next thinking of going with D16Y8, or simply doing the d15b head by shaving the head/thinner gasket from d16y8 and some port and polish
goal is 125-130WHP and 100-105lbs of torque....need to get mid to low 15's
curently, complete interior, all the parts the car weights at 1010kg=about 2225lbs (with me), used to weight at 2390 with b-series (me inside as well)

Hmmm. An all motor SOHC you say? I wish you luck my friend. That won't be an easy or inexpensive task to say the least. Four stars on the respectability meter though!

Re: building a quick sohc vtec in a EG (eg6ajk)
from everything ive been told, the D16Y8 is an all around better motor. It supposedly has a stronger bottom end (ive never torn one apart, so i dont know first hand-this is all just what ive been told), and it has a better head design. Ive also been told that it responds much better to mods.
What i do know first hand is that In my old car, (92 civ dx 4-door that i had a d16y8 swapped into), all i had was a cheap header, underdrive pullies, short ram intake from autozone, and a jet ecu upgrade (all this came with the swap) The car felt quick, and i smacked around a lot of teg LS's and automatic v6 accords.
The kid i sold it too started racing it at the track(he hasnt changed anyhting) and he is pulling a consistant 16.03, and a couple of 15.98's, in a four door with a full enterior. Im not trying to make it sound like this is hella fast or anything, all im saying is that you were looking for mid 15's, and my heavy-*** four door w/a speaker box was 5 or so tenths from that with just bolt-ons. I think this motor with headwork, a decent header/exhaust and a CAI in a hatch could POSSIBLY (maybee-pure speculation) dip into the high 14's. maybee.
I guess i should also mention that this motor has also been converted to run OBD1, that could have something to do with it responding to the mods better..

Mistabone is definately the guy who I am sure could help the most on sohc's. I like his theory in this post https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=82737
he talks about using vx rods with z6 pistons. I know he runs in the 15's on a sohc with out the juice and with it on he is in the 13's.

i sort of hope he responds....he is the guru of s20 trannies and d-series sohc motors ...been on hybrid and TOO for the longest time with him...
as far as the long rod 1.5 i already have that...we poped open one of the JDM sohc vtec d15b blocks....(no its not the 3 stage vtec)

I think that I could possibly run in the 14's with my car if I was to lighten it up some and run some slicks. I have a 98 EX with the d16y8 I like that engine it feels about as good to me as a b16 in an SI the only thing mine lacks is alot of tuning. Im sure if I ever get around to dynoing my car it will run alot better.

Re: building a quick sohc vtec in a EG (ringgold)
i am in the process of modding my d16y6 i would like to get hold of a newer head for teh compression as well as a thinner headgasket or if i could find a used gude head package that would be even better i have a gude cam on the way and stock intake, stock header, and custom 2.5(overkill) exhaust it is in a 92 cx i consistently beat si's, 99-00 si's, and also gsr's at the local 1/8 mile track it is quick but i am hoping to put down over 120 in that motor maybe even 130 when im done and maybe even a j-spec tranny with a lsd if i could ever find one i am planning on putting a stock itr muffler onto my 2.5 in b-pipe for noise resons i got a ticket plus i cant even hear myself think.
and also what size collecter is on the jdm sohc header anyway i always wondered that???

the JDM header seems to use the same collector as a B16A header, the top parts seems restricive...is only i could port it about 3-5mm through out, it would be better then any aftermarket header...
also i belive that JDM 96-7 SpecR bottom 2.5 collector, might also work with the sohc top part...who know will need to try it out...

Re: building a quick sohc vtec in a EG (eg6ajk)
what b-series tb are you gonna use i have a gude with a portmatched intake manifold it really opened it up.... i am also interested in the header setup you are talking about it could prove very interesitng i wonder if a stock sohc manifold will bolt up to a stock usdm itr downpipe ant as bid as jdm but worth a shot do you have any idea hmmm speaking of that my friend has one do you think that would make a difference..... what other mods do you plan on doing i am thinking about chipping my ecu with the sohc mugen program do you have any experience with this program and will it work ok with the gude cam because most mugen programs tend to favor the stock cams from my b-series experience
how easy is it for you to get the jdm 2.5in collecter if this proves to work out i might be in te h market for one and can you get one?

We have sold a JG sohc all motor head with camshaft and the car ran 14's with stock bottom end. THe car has not been dynoed, after that it should run alot better.

most likly the USDM would work the same way...b-series TB are all the same diameter (other then ITR), so it doesn't make a difference but, 92+ preffered for cold states or provinces, since they run coolant valve to warm up quicker in winter....
here are some programs I can rechip a ecu: http://www.geocities.com/gtssport/ecuchip.html
just doing some testing with the different programs, the Skunk2 feel good, above the RPT and DOHC VTEC specs Mugen proggy...but only dyno will tell
