Default building my own engine

i saw on another post that instead of just getting a simple swap for a civic from a b series to a k series
you could just build your own engine and have it be better than a spoon or k series
where exactly would i even begin to start building my own engine in a 99-00 civic(ex or si)
i haven't exactly decided which car i will buy yet.
so i just wanna kno where to start when i do get my car

Factory balanced to within .1 grams with an 11,000 rpm redline, Spoon engines FTW!!!
