Default Broken Valve Cover Bolt - 94 EX Coupe

I over tightened and snapped the middle valve cover bolt in the front. Can I get away with not using the middle. I tried extracting the snapped bolt and that didn't go so well. I just need a temporary fix until I can get a new motor.

BTW, I have a 94 EX coupe.

When you tried extracting the damaged stud out did you pull the valve cover off? Also stock motor, d16z6?

Valve cover was off. The kit from auto zone said to drill into the bolt as far as possible and then use the extractor. I don't think I did a good job of drilling the hole. never quit got one going. Im hoping I will be able to get away with just the four bolts for a few weeks.

^^ You can get away with it, just have to plug the hole in the vc. Otherwise without plugin it oil will shoot out under load. Just keep an eye on it till fixed, but you should be ok.

Done this to a friends d15b before and worked fine.

Did you dimple the bolt w/ a center punch before starting to drill?
That keeps the bit from walking too much.

Also, if you are not using them, try either titanium nitride-coated or
cobalt drill bits. Left handed variety. Hit the bolt w/ copious
quantities of PBBlaster. Use cutting oil when you drill.

Step up the bit size as well.

Truth, same **** happened on a buddies EF. We plugged the hole the hole and it was OK. Just a little mess every know and then. If you were going to keep the motor I wouldn't do it though.

JB Weld works wonders for desperate measures.. I used it with the 10mm bolt and grommet and plugged the hole on the vc. Just let the Jb weld dry and settle and it will work no problem.

My friends civic is still like this to this day. (cheap) Not recommended but sometimes you don't have a choice.

Depends on where/how the bolt broke... if its flush with the top of the cast and you can take a dremel and cut a slot in it then try a flat head screwdriver to turn it. If it is down in the hole get a piece of tube to drop in the hole to protect the threads (i use oil-lite bushings as I have them hanging out) and then drill a pilot hole and try easy outs. Lubricate the drill bit going in then i step the hole up a bit and use easy outs... be cautious as I have snapped easy outs off in it and thats a whole new mess.
