broken timing belt?!?!
 

ok heres the deal, a buddy of mine had some bad luck the other day and his motor mount on the driver side busted...motor fell onto the axle and snapped it...his car is a b16a in a 93 EX

to make a long story short, he got it fixed, drove it and i guess the cover got pushed in onto the timing belt and snapped it.... as soon as the belt broke, the car shut off. we were worried it messed the motor up, so he got a belt, put it on and set the timing(on the cam gears) so they are perfect supposedly... he said when the car starts it spits and sputters and puffs black smoke and runs like a tractor but no banging....

is something in the motor messed up or is the timing still messed up????

first u need to make sure timing is still rite.. and the belt is tight and hasnt jumped timing.. but som etimes when u break a timing belt u can bend valves so once he gets the timing straght.. or makes sure it still is needs to make sure he didnt bend a valve.. or valves

the higher up in the rpms you are the more likely you are to bend a valve. So if he was fucking around he might of bent some valves. Bad timing shouldn't make it spit out black smoke unless something is wrong besides the belt.

Almost for sure gunna need new valves. Thats one thing that sucks about compact motors. Sorry to hear that. If he does need the valves might as well get a aftermatket valve set and if he has the money he should get the whole kit. springs, valves, and retainers. Should prolly get valve guides too.

def would take it to a shop and get them too look at it. mess with the timing some and even take off the valve cover and u mite be able to c summin who knows.. some times 15 mins of work can save u 500 bucks.. but def sounds liek pooped valves sry bro but when it breaks time for after market.. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif

i was hoping it wouldnt need new valves...damn.

how much roughly for cheap, but good, valves, springs, retainers, etc..?

he said he set it on the cam gears and we took the v/c off and it looked PERFECT...ive never seen a motor so clean...no metal peices or shavings...

im not sure he did the bottom pully though....

shit man.. cheap but good valves yeah hard to find.. probly have to have um used. but skunk2 is good..

Make sure that he set TDC befroe he put the new timing belt on, or else you're gonna have to pull the head to make sure he didn't expletive anything up.

The bottom end should be fine.

shit, i dont think he did set TDC....

what can that mean? lol could that be why its puffing smoke?

ok, first off, it doesn't sound like a tractor if it is what I think you mean. Trust me, I live on a farm and own/drive plenty of tractors. He probably bent a couple of valves or when he put the timing belt on, he did not have all the marks lined up. IF he has the marks all lined up and you actually know what you are doing, then take the head off and examine stuff. He could have anything from one bent valve to all bend valves and fucked up pistons. Oh, by the way, tdc is when the number one piston is at the top of the cylinder and in the copmpression stroke because this is the only time that the valves for the number one cylinder are completely closed.

cliff notes,
1. expletive you for making fun of tractors
2. check timing and make sure all the marks are right
3. if timing is right, time to take the engine apart

i know what tdc is, i just said he didnt make sure it was there like a dumbass.

well do it over again, and make sure everthing is right.

Too late...if he turned the engine without setting the engine to TDC he prob messed up the valves for sure...

ok so i had a similiar problem on a 93 honda del sol with a d15b7. This girl was driving it and shifted into 4th and the timing belt snapped. She was at lower rpms as she said atleast. I took the head off and i don't see any marks on the valves or the pistons. And then i rotated the camshaft slowly and got one set of valves open. I then took a small paint brush and some white paint and painted around the underside and side of the valves and then rotated the cam again to close them. I opened them back up and checked to see if the paint went all the way around on the head where the valves seat and i did this to all of them and they all made a full circle and what appeared to be a perfect seal. Is this a sufficient way of checking to see if the valves are bent without having to take everything out.
